Remember hearing rumours of the Pixies playing last year, which never happened. They have a date in September, never stopped previous artists playing a week or two before hand at EP.

Alas, not a runner. They're in Pasadena on the Saturday. I don't think they've ever got beyond a fervently held wish on here.

Anyone else feel like there's a lacking of ska on this year's line up? Wonder will they grab anyone like The Skints or The Interrupters?

    The Interrupters would be great.

For what its worrh I think the next announcement will include Lewis Capaldi, Royal Blood, making a big thing of Johnny Marr, Gerry Cinnamon and a load of Irish middke of the roaders.

Johnny, Gerry and Royal Blood will do me.

...and to think Lewis Capaldi played the Cosby Tent to two men and a wee lad a couple of years ago in the middle of the afternoon. Changed times.

    Pohoda Festival feedback
Nice Slovak event, 30k capacity, last went in 2017 and the prices have greatly increased but still hugely affordable (eg beer up from €1.25 to €2.00 a pint, weekend ticket €99, meal circa €5, Pink Moon style tent & mattress €59). Relaxed, friendly, spacious, uber-clean arena and campsites (we really do disgrace ourselves here, the Brits our only real competitors for messiness. Drunkenness for sure but mild. Saw one guy puking all weekend and he was Scottish!). Bars were open 24 hours from 2pm on Thursday til 8am on Sunday. No spirits sold bar a small cocktail bar so you’re allowed to take them in provided they’re not in glass bottles. Nobody smuggles beer in as its affordable.

Though for all its messiness EP remains my fave destination.

Loads of great new acts, decent dance & electronica from US, Russia, Holland, UK, Germany & everywhere basically (Jeff Mills, Veronica Vasicka, Trojan Sound System, etc). Some metal and lots of punk and Central European experimental stuff. Skipped most of the major acts in favour of the new but caught decent sets by Skepta, Death Grips, Plastic People of the Universe (how many bands can say they started a revolution?), Liam Gallagher, Blind Boys of Alabama, Mac Demarco and The Roots.

    EP confirmed acts
The 1975 - you’ve likely made your mind up already. Unlikely to win new converts. The show is impressive (albeit with idiotic sloganeering) but they’re not.
Viagra Boys - not enough tunes but very entertaining and they’ll rock Stradbally. Late night tent slot could be an earth shaker.
Michael Kiwanuka - can do no wrong lately for me. Love & Hate maybe my top album of this decade. Decent at his first main stage EP appearance, superb in the Electric Arena last time and hoping he’ll be there again. Same set as last time but who cares?

    Post Punk (for Stillill42)
Life - Hull crew, wild frontman. Get ‘em on the next announcement.
Snapped Ankles - Fab sound, terrible stage outfits (plants/trees?), may turn out to be the best of all the current crews.

    New Acts
Penelope Isles - Jangly guitars & shoegaze. Better live than on record. BBC6 album of the day today.
Sink Ya Teeth - Norwich duo. Filled in brilliantly when Lykke Li missed her flight. Nice electronic Moroder disco stuff.
Cari Cari - Austrian surf (a thing?). Crowd lapped it up.
Sudan Archives -US violinist and beats specialist. So good I skipped Charlotte Gainsbourg.
Dream Wife - London band with Icelandic front woman. You’ll hear more from them.
Kokoko - my act of the weekend. Congolese noise experimenters. BBC6 faves. Playing End of the Road and one night free that weekend. Ah lads, please spend it in Stradbally.

All of the above would fit very nicely into the next announcement. Let’s hope for three or four of them. And 24-hour bars selling €2 pints at EP.

Very nice review.. seems seriously cheap!.

On value for money We always say on here "acts at Glastonbury are so much better" etc. I was watching a documentary on the history of Glastonbury, one music promoter-manager said "you don't play Glastonbury to get rich, they don't pay very well, acts will typically get about 1/5 of their normal fee" I believe the Evesons make some sort of charity contribution.

But this and your post Seathrun66, got me thinking if you were to make pie chart of the expenditures EP face, what % do you think would go on booking acts?

O man I'm in a very hot Madrid with work, a colleague ex Irish here was at madcool lastweekend (which also seems serious value for money) but how oh how do they do festivals in these temps!!!!

Excellent review Seath, you should be blogging all this stuff too as you have a good way with words describing the music. :)

didn't Dream Wife already play EP? Supported The National in Donnybrook last year too.

They were at Body & Soul this year, I think.

Yes, saw them at Body and Soul.

Was excited to see them having checked them out on Spotify beforehand.

Failed the acid test of making me feel p1ssed off that I had to keep half an eye on the kids while watching.

Was happy out messing around with the 4 year old at the ar$e end of the tent, ignoring the music at that gig.

Specifically felt the singer didn’t really cut it vocally live

Thanks man. Re Glasto all the profits go to Water Aid, Oxfam and Green peace. The Eavises pay themselves decent wages but fair ones given the work put in and the loss of farm earnings for several months.

As to percentage spent on acts I would only be guessing. Anyone with insider info?

Thanks BD. Nice idea but it'd be a repetitive weekly summary of gigs at the Roisin.

I was at Day 1 of Mad Cool last week. First acts begin at 6:30pm to avoid the really high temperatures. Chemical Bros, Noel Gallagher, Lauryn Hill, Vampire Weekend, Iggy Pop, Bon Iver, Disclosure all played on the day I was there. Sensational value for money. I would go back next year in a heartbeat. Only gripe is that the final acts start very late. Chemical Bros set began at 3AM. Probably necessary with the evening start though.

On the impending announcement, I'm really hoping for Gerry Cinnamon. Seen him support Liam Gallagher in Cork and his onstage energy is infectious.

GERRY CINNAMON – JOHNNY MARR – J HUS – CHARLI XCX

    RICHIE HAWTIN – RICHARD ASHCROFT

ALL TVVINS – BIIG PIIG – BRITTANY HOWARD – CASSIA – DAVID KEENAN

DECLAN J DONOVAN – DJ SEINFIELD – DUFF MCKAGAN – EASY LIFE – EVE – FJAAK

GIRL IN RED – IDER – INHALER – JUST MUSTARD – KETTAMA – LE BOOM – MAVERICK SABRE - MELLA DEE – OTHERKIN – POWPIG

REBŪKE – ROB DE BOER – SILVERBACKS – SOJA – SOMEBODY’S CHILD - SPORTS TEAM –TALOS – ULY – VIAGRA BOYS

WHITE REAPER – WILD YOUTH - WORKING MEN’S CLUB – YONAKA

Some of these had already been self-announced/rumoured but there'll be some happy people with this, I'd say.

Brittany Howard is interesting - think she only has a few solo tracks but Alabama Shakes are great.

I'd expect more for the smaller areas like Body & Soul. Not sure how this compares to previous years for quantity - is there usually more than this in the main arena?

    The press release says:
And of course there is much, much more to look forward to from the rowdy guitar riffs in Trailer Park and Salty Dog, to the tranquil whimsical wonderland that is The Hazel Wood, to the pulsating heart of Electric Picnic – The Body & Soul Village. Never one to rest on our laurels, stay tuned for some exciting news on Freetown, the brand new area which promises to bring a whole new level of intrigue.

Probably another 3-4 acts I'd be interested in from the announcement. Happy enough now, I'm only there Friday evening to Sunday morning so should have my card well filled out now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭LowOdour

    some interesting things worth seeing
Johnny Marr, Richard Ashcroft, Viagra Boys, White Reaper, Sports Team

Hopefully some other goods stuff there to discover. Inhaler are Bono Jr's band if I am correct?

    no headliner announcement then? unusual

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,750 ✭✭✭✭everlast75

Maher, Ashcroft, coupled with Cocker that's a whole demographic looked after.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,598 ✭✭✭✭bodhrandude

Will typically no Aphex but Richie Hawtin should be good having caught a bit of his set in 2012, Johnny Marr was great I think in 2013, I recognise IDER from the Body&Soul main stage a few years ago who are lovely and charming. Not too bad an announcement. Although I feel like quitting going to this altogether as they never listen to my requests so it makes me wonder why I bother still.

    Snarky Snark Snark

Think my dance card should be nicely fleshed out with that now, Ashcroft is a worry though, last time I saw the gobby wigan twat he was absolutely dire live.

There probably isn't much space for it, tbh. As well as the four headline acts - Hozier, 1975, Strokes and Florence - there's half a dozen acts in the second tier that will draw massive crowds. I'd expect Billie Eilish, Christine and the Queens, Dermot Kennedy, Gerry Cinnamon and Years & Years to all get big crowds on the main stage too. Maybe add James Blake to that too? He headlines festivals elsewhere, though I dunno if he's as popular here as elsewhere.

The one thing that does stick out to me, though, is the lack of a late night electronic act - will they chance Four Tet, Richie Hawtin or someone else there or try something different?

Or is there one more to come - the Chemical Brothers headlining 'Freetown' or something like that?
