Folks, let be honest too much pop music, Billie, Charlie, 1975, Years, Dermot Kennedy, Jess Glynn. And FFS Kodaline, Riptide etc.

No hip hop, no new Americana or break thru indie, no heritage like Gill Scott Heron, Family stone, Mavis Staples etc.

Worst line up yet in 12 years of attendance.

    P.

Agree about the americana. If I'm not mistaken, there has always been a big act playing the Sunday. Over the last few years we had Coulter wall, Phosphorescent and the avett brothers. I don't see anything this year.

    Snarky Snark Snark

The headlinder are bargin basement in fairness to him. There's not one true headliner for any of the nights. Well not what we were expecting anyway for something called the Electric picnic. More like the middle of the road lighters in the air picnic.

C’mon, that’s utter bull****, FATM & The Strokes are headlining festivals all over the world, just because they don’t appeal to people does not diminish the fact they are proper headliners.

Yeah what scruff said. It's also a massive deal to have an Irish headliner that has massively broad appeal. 1975 not for me but I'd still say they are a pretty big act. Just because it doesn't have a big name electronic act people are dismissing it.

    So, EA headliners ?
I'm thinking CATQ, Gerry Cinnamon and Years and Years. Not sure EP will be made up of Gerry cinnamon's fanbase but he will get a big crowd.

I don't think Gerry Cinnamon has enough material to headline the EA, I'm guess he'll do an early main stage show.

When was the last time they didn't have a big name dance act though?
In fairness it's a reasonable expectation for a 3 day festival. They have to at least tick all the boxes or peoples expectations will change.
Personally I'll be less inclined to buy tickets next year based on the above.

Well I find the lineup a bit questionable this year but there is a few gems in there, not too bothered about there not being an electronic headliner now as I did get to see Orbital at ATN which made my summer really and on the drier day too. My picks for EP:

    King Kong Company
    The Strokes
Billie Elish (Might check a little of her set out)
    Christine & the Queens
    Four Tet
    Jarvis Cocker
    Johnny Marr
Richard Ashcroft (Have never seen him or the Verve so should be interesting)
Richie Hawtin (Was excellent last time in 2012)
Roisin Murphy (Will try and get a closer look this time)
The Streets (Might check them out)
    Courtney Barnett
    DJ Seinfield
    Echo & the Bunnymen
    Kolsch
    Maceo Plex
    Michael Kinwanuka
    Eve
    Ider
Let's Eat Grandma (What a name, must check them out)
    Otherkin
    Viagra Boys
    Yves Tumor

It will be mainly a float around stages and staying if I like the sound or the visuals being particularly arresting. ;)

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

2008 I remember Pfunk headlined the Saturday night but was an incredible act and 2014 Chic closed the main stage on Saturday night.

With the greatest of respect bodhrandude, the only act I'd be interested in seeing is Courtney Barnett. It's like a concert line up from 1986, when music bottomed out.

    1986?

Literally two of those acts existed in 1986, and they were damn great back then too

The Strokes - hugely influential act that still headline festivals everywhere. Including Glasto.
Florence and the Machine - same as above regarding headline slots, Three UK album number ones, US number one in 2015.
Hozier - US number one this year, 2014 album was US number two.
The 1975 - US number one in 2016. Three UK number ones. Headlining Reading/Leeds and lots of other fests.
Billie Eilish - International number one album this year including US & UK.

Only The Strokes are to my taste though I'm impressed with Billie Eilish. And whatever you think of them none are anywhere near bargain basement.

You can sort of gauge the slippage of the line up from the dizzy heights that some of the homegrown talent has reached on the bill. Even allowing for the mass appeal of your Dermo Kennedys and your Hoziers, David Keenan is on the same billing as Echo and the Bunnymen. Now I really like David but you wouldn't have got that 4 or 5 years ago.

Anyway, look, if it was Irish acts and nothing else, I'd have a great weekend. Every young lad in the country seems to be listening to Joy Division these days so I'll be well looked after. Just noticed the Skatuesques are in Trenchtown this year. Had a beautiful half hour on the Saturday morning (?) last year at a sunny Salty Dog listening to those girls belting out ska classics. That's the sort of thing that you forget when weeping and gnashing teeth over ****ty announcements.

Was there too last year. great morning. Brother in law rang from London to say he was getting married. When? says I.

3 o'clock this afternoon he says!! lol

We raised a few cans to him at Salty Dog.

Courtney Barret is probably filling that slot

It's not the year, it was a low point in human art and music. Live music specifically.

Ad nauseum I've been asking for Wilco and their absence diminishes the fest a little for me. EP surely could have got them a few days before their European fest starts. Nonetheless there's loads for me to see and I expect to have another great year, though a truncated one as my pregnant partner ain't letting me off the leash for the entire weekend. Getting there at all is a big bonus. looking forward to seeing many of these (essential with an asterik) and also some of the boardsies crew:

    The Strokes *
    Michael Kiwanuka *
    Courtney Barnett *
    Johnny Marr *
    Billie Eilish *
    Echo & The Bunnymen *
    Richard Ashcroft *
    The Streets *
    Let's Eat Grandma
    Sons of Kemet
Bonnie Tyler (back me up Mucker!) *
    The Frank and Walters
    Otherkin
    Viagra Boys
    Touts *
    Christine & the Queens *
    An Emotional Fish *
    The Clockworks
    Montauk Hotel
    Powpig
    Odd Morris
    Bodega
    Pillow Queens
    Meltybrains
    Working Men's club
    Sports Team
    Inhaler
    Talos
    David Keenan
    Parquet Courts *
    Duff McKagan
    Brittany Howard
    Four Tet
    James Blake
    Bootleg Beach Boys
    These Charming Men *
    Roadhouse Doors

It wasn't a great crop, few standouts. And your missing Reign in Blood. Wait two more years and music started to pick up again. My original point being, I'm sure you will all have a good time but it's not great and you're too much invested already.

Your original point is lost in the middle of your 1986 mire.

The 1986 concert whose performers included:

    The Boomtown Rats
    Thin Lizzy
    Rory Gallager
    Elvis Costello
    U2
    The Pogues
    The Chieftans
    Moving Hearts
    Van Morrison
    Christy Moore

That Self-Aid? As bad years for live performances go, that was amongst the better ones.

    The Boomtown Rats - ffs
Thin Lizzy - it wasn't Thin Lizzy
Rory Gallager - <sic> fair enough
    Elvis Costello - meh
    U2 - decent
The Pogues - brilliant but better in a small venue
    The Chieftans - not suited
    Moving Hearts - not suited
Van Morrison - legend, not appreciated
    Christy Moore - not sure

    Twice today

    1988 was when things improved.

So just because it wasn't to your taste it was a bad gig? The whole idea of self aid was silly but the music certainly wasn't.

The idea was nice. Certainly better than than choosing budget airlines acts at a festival that's already sold out. And again, I'm sure it will be a great weekend but ffs it's a dreadful lineup.

I think it's a great lineup, headliners are a bit meh, but the undercard is stuffed full of quality for my taste in music.

There's an awful lot of posters on here who conflate "I don't like the band" to "the band isn't big enough to headline" which is weird.

I'm no fan of Hozier or Florence + the Machine but they are inarguably headline material for this festival.

The Strokes are a great act (and one who may qualify as "legacy" for plenty of the younger attendees at the festival), and the 1975, Billie Eilish, Christine and the Queens and others are popular acts who play prominent slots at festivals all over the world.

It's not all to my taste, but EP has done well to bag a lot of big names who will appeal to many of those attending the festival.
