Except at a restaurant, you can't just move ten feet away and instantly resolve the problem.

    Agreed
I've tutted at a few parents/kids in my time at EP but I can't say it's ever made one ounce of difference to my enjoyment of the festival. Just like the under-25s who are so widely hated on this forum ("let's kick some teenagers, lol"), families are just there to enjoy themselves.

To quote yourself, you need to take that comment a little bit less seriously :)
It's a music festival, people need to take it just a little bit less seriously. It's more like arriving at Eddie Rockets and being surprised there's a family sitting there.

    Not quite, to be fair.

Anyway... live and let live, eh?

Ah here. Widely hated my arse. You've been around here long enough to know that's way off the spirit in which that was meant. I'm surprised at you. Wtf is up with everybody today?

Should clarify, I know that people don't actually go around kicking teenagers...

But it does annoy me that every time something is announced that appeals more to the under-30s, it's greeted with howls of derision here (and being under-30 is a distant memory for me).

There were loads of stories on here of lovely teenagers after this year and a general acknowledgement of the value of the diversity of age groups and music. I think the negativity is aimed at bad music full stop, not young music. Who are we to say Picture This or Gavin James constitute bad music, that, of course, is a different and very valid argument. I personally love the yoof.

as long as folks are happy to pay full whack for their ticket pre line up announcement festival republic will not be splashing out on the kind of acts that you see elsewhere in europe - with a virtual monopoly on the big festival experience in Ireland it just doesn't make business sense. Dream on you dreamers. I wish it weren't so.

I don't think it's admirable to bring children to a very late-night gig surrounded by adults going crazy.

I think you've just got to have some trust in the judgement of parents taking their kids to festivals. And let them decide when their kids are ready for bed.

Most adults there are not going crazy and it's surely not asking too much for people to not jeopardise kids at a festival that's open to almost all ages. Parents can reasonably expect not to be packed off to bed with their kids at 8/9pm at a family-friendly event.

I've not taken my son to EP yet, but I'd like to and I'd also prefer not to be tutted at for having him on my shoulders at 9pm were he keen on still seeing stuff then.

There's plenty that appeals to the under 30s that gets stick here. However there's plenty that doesn't (Sigrid, Dua Lipa, Kendrick Lamar, etc). It's just the bad stuff we feel obliged to disparage.

Being a parent, one thing I am always keen to not do, is judge other people's parenting.

Never brought ours to EP. That's our choice. Other people make different choices. Good luck to them.

Another (interesting) take on the PR side of the festival. It took us until the end of November last year to rack up this many posts on the thread. EP has not lost its 'talkability.'

I’m not judging anyone’s parenting except in the most extreme cases, (who can help but do that..) I am only concerned with how seeing kids late at night affects my enjoyment. And much as I’d like to be more laid back about it, it does affect my enjoyment. But it’s totally personal to me and I’m simply mentioning it in the context of my review of the weekend. To each their own.

And I met some really fabulous teenagers this year. No kicks from me

I wonder do they select the best acts to go on the sunday? If so, might try to get a sunday ticket this year

Headliners for 2019 probably already booked before this year's fest took place. Standard practice for festival promoters. They're still competing against other festivals and aware that it's in their interest to supply an impressive lineup.

We've also just had the top hip-hop artist on the planet as well as two other acts who continue to headline European festivals. Many continental events have very top-heavy line-ups which is definitely not the case with EP. FR fill 35 stages and for me only Glastonbury & Primavera Sound have more acts over the weekend that I'd want to see.

EP 2019 sells tickets based on the strength of the EP 2018 festival. So if the line up for EP 2019 is bad it wont affect the sales of EP 2019 but it might affect the demand for EP 2020.

I agree with you though that leading and leeds had a similar lineup to EP but with a few extra mid tier draws.

Of course, there is a substantial group of people who will go to EP anyway, but still they need to keep the lineup for 2019 good if they want to maintain demand in future years.

I think it's definitely skewered towards a younger audience as they (I think correctly) assume that most Sunday tickets go to the under-25s. But in terms of best acts it seems pretty spread out over the three days.

Haven't got around to posting any "2018 review" type stuff, but have to say I thoroughly enjoyed Sigrid prob largely because of all the hyped up youngsters creating a great atmosphere (despite the sound being a bit rubbish and only half liking her music), and Raye on the Sunday was an absolute blast, again full of youngsters going nuts. Better tunes than Sigrid too imo.

Neither a patch on Mount Kimbie, my weekend highlight, who were levels above what I'd seen the previous times I'd been at them - thought it was a genius show. Much smaller crowd than either of the above.

More stuff that appeals to the under 30s next year please, along with the loads and loads of stuff that appeals to all sorts of other people too.

The diversity is what makes the festival special. Means there's something great for lots and lots of people, and something to p1ss all of them off too :)

It has been interesting reading the posts the last while. I havec3 kids never brought them both because they not interested and neither am i. Ep is my weekend when i get away from normal life and immerse myself in music which is one of my passions. However that's me and whatever others do is for them to decide. Have to say kids have never annoyed me at any time of the day or night however I do worry sometimes for them when It is clear that they are too tired or bored.
Spoke to all ages this year and all were great chats. It's about the person not the age. The diversity of people all there to enjoy themselves and the relaxed atmosphere are things I love about EP. Once not causing trouble everyone to there own and if they are annoying you there is a few hundred acres to get away from them.

I thought all the young people was great myself, all out to have a good time, never seen the sh1t that made Oxegen infamous and I got on with everyone charmingly even the Uggy Uggy gobsh1te of yore from the Jimi Hendrix end of the carnival was turned down in the early hours, twas a very pleasant experience. My only complaint was with Specialised Security and that was three people at the most, they are just doing their job but they don't need to be so precise with their searches. Coming into the arena from the Salty Dog they were really thorough luckily security thought my Snoop Dogg weed vaporoiser was a pen. :)

If you want to get into it, you got to get out of it. (Hawkwind 1982)

Mount Kimbie were great. Small crowd but real fans, youngfella next to me gave me heads up on King Krule appearing. Felt like a moment when he arrived and tore up the stage. Felt all of my 40+ years the last couple of weeks but worth it to experience moments like that.

Have to say I enjoyed what I caught of both. Last 20 mins of KK and found him to be quite unique and not what I expected, more of a quirkier blues/jazz/beats Waits-ish hybrid. An acquired taste though. A little like early Prefab Sprout. Very impressed and I'd check him out again.

Sorry - quick question. Due to my work travel schedule, I missed the Early Bird Loyalty tickets. But I can’t seem to buy normal full-price tickets on Ticketmaster. Surely EP19 hasn’t sold out already?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,611 ✭✭✭Mollyb60

They won't be released till later.

  • Registered Users Posts: 229 ✭✭Bruce2008

I did not see one fight or bit of trouble all weekend and we were out and about into the early hours.
55,000 people in a field full of drink and god knows what else and no trouble. If you put 50 in any street in any town or village in Ireland and it wouldn't be long before something kicked off. Its amazing to see everyone enjoying themselves and seen a good bit of others looking after ones under the weather!
Correct me if I'm wrong but that never made the news! Pity the youth of today never make the good news.
Ok thats my rant over for today!!!

My understanding is all early birds are sold out, the next tickets on sale will be in March @full price. I could be wrong on this?

Was reading of those tacky magazines today and see that synth pioneers Heaven 17 as part of an 80s weekender are playing Butlins in Bognor Regis.

EP must save them from such a sorry and sh1t state of affairs.

Sounds much worse than it is. Those weekends are actually pretty cool. Line up for the Heaven 17 one included ABC, Peter Hook, Big Country, Marc Almond, Blacmange, Blow Monkeys and others. Loads for EP.

An indie one there in January (Rockaway Beach) has Gary Numan, Echo & the Bunnymen, Barry Adamson, Goat Girl, etc.

Butlins in Minehead was where All Tomorrow's Parties were based for seventeen years, had weekends curated by Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Mogwai, etc.

Any pals who've gone to these weekends have loved it. Great music and the very reasonable tickets include the price of accommodation in the chalets. The artists also stay in the same lodges so you see them out and about over the weekend.

And yeah, let's get Heaven 17 to Stradbally. Long overdue. And still sounding great.
