Would you have a problem sharing with someone who has been in prison?

Would you have a major issue if you heard that about a new tenant or would it depend on the person moving in and give them a chance?

Depends what he was in for, but best avoided Imo. I gave a lad a job that had been inside for two years but had changed his life around. He was an animal to work - for about a month, then the money was burning a hole in his pocket n he fell off the wagon.
When his mates call over for a session could get hairy!

Depends what they were in for, it if was not paying their tv licence I'd me more inclined to think they were safe enough, if it was for arson, fraud, criminal damage, assault or murder I wouldn't risk it.

Perhaps Google their name to see what they were in for.

I'm assuming that you'e the ex con? If the first words out of your mouth is that you're an ex-con, their first impression of you may not be the best. Perhaps don't mention it?

I've lived with many ex-prisoners ... addiction and crime go hand in hand, you'll often find that if the person is no longer in active addiction, they wouldn't dream of doing whatever illegal/immoral things that got them locked up. Many of my close friends have done time, I'd still happily live with the majority of them, a criminal record wouldn't be an issue for me.

I'd actually be less likely to live with someone who'd done something awful while fully clean/sober and in their right senses ...

I'd you're a landlord, you do need to inform your insurance company if anyone living in the house has a conviction.

Yes I am the "ex con"

I started working in a new job a few months back and was looking to rent a room and a lad at work I am friendly with had a room coming up as his brother was moving out. He said he liked that he knew me and we agreed about rent and bills. It really would have suited me well.

I was due to move in this week but he told me yesterday that it ad fallen through because the others didnt feel comfortable about e moving in when they found out I had a criminal record and had been in prison

I am pissed off about this because I told him to be up front and honest. The way I see it is that I have served my time and am trying to get on with my life ad he was happy enough ro rent the eoom to me. He said he wouldnt have a problem with it but the others did.

I wouldn't go telling people in future Mark. It's your business. It will just go against you.

As others have said, my attitude would really depend on what your conviction was for - if it was anything violent or involving burglary/theft, sorry, but I wouldn't want to live with you either.

Not paying your tv licence/a few parking fines, I could get past.

I would have a problem with it, yeah.

I fully accept that people can change, but with the high rates of reoffending, I would rather not risk it. Working or socialising together is one thing, but living with someone is another. You need to be fairly certain that you're sharing with someone trustworthy and honest... and your history says otherwise.

I shared a room with an ex republican prisoner for a good while,he was sound.

I didn't know at the time but his open university degree and rollies made sense later

Depends on what it was for
tax fraud or something - whatever
murdering their previous housemates in their sleep - no thanks

Mod: this isn't funny or an acceptable standard for this forum. Don't do it again.

As you said, you've done your time. Why tell someone? Not aware of it being a prerequisite.

    Hope you get sorted soon.

Just one thing to add, by telling your friend you did pass the onus onto him. By that I mean if anything did go wrong and he was asked, 'did you know' he would have been in an awkward position. The reason I'm saying this is so that you may understand your friend's actions.

But, as per above, your business unless required to report. Don't offload ;)

If "doing your time" is enough to wipe the slate clean, then why do we have criminal records?

Anything to do with violence / sex abuse / theft would get a big nope from me too.

Is there a legal requirement to disclose? That's all that should concern the OP.

    I'll not disagree with you.
