I like the idea of the new climb being added on the last lap!

Froome and Thomas aren't racing and Landa I'm not sure about.

A man I thought looked great in canada at the weekend and is in recent good form is Matej Mohoric , not sure if it's a course for him though or if he'd be riding for Roglic?

This is going to go down like a lead balloon but fcuk it.

There is a whole forum for gambling/betting.
    https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=684

This is a cycling forum with a strong emphasis on sports cycling in its many forms.

We seem to have lost the skill over the last 20 years in particular to discuss sports on their merits and merits alone without a reference to what the bookies think. Fcuk the bookies. There was a time it was just horses, greyhounds and the pick of the bunch road bowling but now every sport is distilled down to what the price is.

Any chance we go keep this cancer away from this sport in this little corner of the internet

Well I think it's great to have the odds on these threads as I find it interesting so hopefully it stays.

Calling it a cancer is a it OTT 🙄

MOD VOICE: While I don't gamble myself, they are used by some as an indicator for likely winners so have relevance. i have changed the thread into a general discussion on the worlds. This may include betting but is open up to any related aspect. As always, spoiler rules apply on the day if televised.

I don't gamble but I find bookies odds an excellent indicator of the likelyhood of future events. In fact they are probably the best metric available in this regard, its the bookies response to peoples crowdsourced expectations (bets), weighted by their commitment to those expectations (amount they will bet at those odds), in an extremely easy to understand format that can be translated to a % likelyhood of happening in a moment in your head! That's why I include them, and will continue to do so, it is in no way, shape or form meant to encourage betting!

23-30 Sept Euro Sport will cover it all and likely BBC will show some. Mens road race on the 30th but if it's anything like last year every race is going to be worth a look.

    Valverde !!!
A 38 year old..... What a freak of nature to be in contention for the Vuelta, and amongst the top faves for the Worlds!
    Just like a good wine......

I think Alaphillipe will do it. Maybe Dumoulin as an outsider ...

I don't gamble either, but that's irrelevant like whether you do or not.

In the last 20 years or so, with popularity of National Lotteries and online gambling, issues from gambling have mushroomed.

Ireland per head of population is the worst in Euro with an estimated 40,000 problem gamblers. Each of those individuals problems has a huge impact on immediate friends and family and wider society.

One of the primary goals of the industry was the normalisation of gambling; such that betting on first to score, first goal, RR world champion is normal acceptable and harmless. In many areas of media they have been hugely successful; it's now really hard to avoid when Cheltenham, Galway races etc etc is on. A radio discussion on gaa/soccer/rugby will more often than not refer to the price. At 43 I can remember a time when that was not the case.

You posting, of industry derived data, is doing their job for them. It is detrimental to image of sport, and what sport should stand for.

As a simple example of the damage I've seen an proud farming elderly couple deny their own surname, such was the harm their son's gambling brought to their door. The examples are almost countless though.

There was a time when I played a lot of poker; primarily in casinos and kept a book and made money from it. It's not hard to do with discipline; but the primary ingredient needed is an eye for human weaknesses and the ruthlessness to exploit it. On a global scale that is exactly what the gambling industry does at a huge human cost.

The association of gambling with cycling is assisting the industry; whether its your intent or not is irrelevant.

Look why not start a separate thread on your issues with gambling and leave us to enjoy a thread on the world's without contaminating it?

Really hope Valverde doesn't do it, his 'freak of nature' has a background. Should be a fairly caiotic finish anyway with the laps of the hills! Looking forward to seeing how Dunbar goes too, seems to be in good form

As well as he's going he may well be undone by the tactics of the French Colombian and Italian espoirs. Could be a cracker. The Swiss lad who won 2 stages in LAvenir is still in form, finished with Dunbar last week. The Slovenian lad who won LAvenir overall won another 2.2 ranked event 2 weeks later. He's only 19

I havent been able to find a list of Irish riders going to Innsbruck for the Championships. I presume the team has been confirmed, is there a list published?

I like the way Nibali went in the latter stages of Vuelta, looks like he is coming to form at the right time for me.

I would have liked him to be in a bit better form... he still seemed to be dropped easily enough when the going got tough in the Vuelta. Unless he was sandbagging. Time will tell in Innsbruck I suppose!
