Transferred to EIR but still being billed by Vodafone due to UAN not changed over

We changed provider to EIR in January and gave our Vodafone UAN number to be transferred.  Vodafone continued to charge us for months.  We were eventually told that EIR had not taken over our UAN number from Vodafone.
EIR seems to have given us a new UAN, which has resulted in us losing our phone number that we have had at our address for 30 years.  We now have a new number which we didn`t want, and vodafone are sending demand letters for the bills we haven`t paid.
Has anyone had this happen to them, and what was the result?
