Looking for a gaming mouse suggestion :)

    Hey guys and gals

Unfortunately, the mouse I use for gaming has died. It was a Steel Series World of Warcraft: Cataclysm mouse that was an Xmas present a few years back, and it was great. Buttons but not too many, but mainly it was a lovely chunky mouse. It felt really solid.

My brother has let me use his Razer Naga Chroma MMO mouse, but if I'm honest, it feels so dainty compared to my older one, and has way too many buttons on it.

So I'm in search of suggestions for a new gaming mouse. I tend to play MMOs rather than shooters, and while I'd like a few buttons on it, I don't need 100 of them.

Price range is preferably round the €50 mark, but I can stretch a bit more if necessary. I can't stretch to the €140 it would cost to just rebuy the old mouse I had.

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Rocket Jump Ninja has some of the best guides I've seen for gaming-orientated peripherals, so I'd start there for a general overview.

Personally I use Deathadders both at home and in work and would swear by them for my particular usage.

Seconded for RJN. I used a Logitech G403. It's simply wonderful.

There's a new model of it up for preorder with the new HERO sensor and better cable so the older model might get a discount in a few weeks if you can hold on a bit.

The final mouse, nothing ive used comes close and ive used all the above mentioned apart from the razor.
The G502 would be my second choice.
The Final Mouse was like going from a 60hz to 144hz panel for me,incredible performance.

    G502 is heavy (121-168g)

    Check out G403/G703 & G305 reviews.

The weight is perfect for me. I have a G203 in work and it's way too light for me for gaming. The G502 fit's my hand perfectly out of any mice i tried. The only thing that i'm not mad about is the scroll wheel but you get used to it.

G502 is the best and possibly coolest looking mouse I've ever owned. Logitech just know how to make good mice, got it on sale on Amazon for 31€ absolute steal

Yeah +1 on the g502 I got it recently based on what people here said don't regret it. Replaced my old g700s. You can add weights if it's too light also.

    +1 for G502

Logitech make the best gaming peripherals, by far

I've a G305 on the way because G403 still feels heavy for flick shots.
In FPS gaming, lighter is generally recommended.

e.g. RocketJumpNinja doesn't even list the G502 in his Top 40 anymore.
And among pro Overwatch players, only 3 of 178 still use a G502.

I don't see the big deal about that chap at all. He only seems to play Quake which is not what most gamer's want to know about different mouse performance.

    RJN plays Overwatch, too.
And Quake is a great way to test mice, since it has all 3 gun styles (hitscan, tracking & projectile).

For me it's how comfortable the mouse is in the hand that's most important. Most high end mice have very similar sensor's so in that respect they all are very close performance wise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭jonski

I'm not questioning RJN but I notice his #1 is a wireless mouse ..... now I know I'm old so there is no need to bring that up ....but when did a wireless mouse become a thing for FPS ?

Most high end one's have a 1ms response time which is the same as high end wired mice.

Have a G403 wireless (as above), awaiting a G305 wireless.
Once you go wireless the lack of cable drag is noticeable within seconds.

Logitech's new HERO sensor (used in G Pro, G Pro wireless, G305 & G603) is essentially a clone of the PWM3366 (top sensor) but with vastly improved battery life.

Just make sure you know of the cable issues the G502 can have. Mines been kinked since day 1 and it can be a proper pita some times because of it.

    Bungee solves all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,893 ✭✭✭Canis Lupus

I'd be tempted to make a foray back into wireless. I'd be lying if I said I find the cable annoying at times and I don't know if I want a bungee cluttering the desk. Might treat myself for Xmas.

FWIW I've the G502 and I like it a lot. Having said that I find myself annoyed with the cable a bit from time to time.

Also, I think it's important as to what mouse mat you pair these things with. I used to use the hard logitech things and in the last year or so swapped out to a ginormous Steelseries QcK cloth mouse mat and I've never looked back. Absolutely worth the investment if you're serious enough about gaming to be worried about what mouse to get.

Don't get a Deathadder whatever you do. Barely in a year on mine and looking to get it returned under warranty

Might just jump in here but anyone recommend a good keyboard?

I was looking at the Logitech G613 when it was reduced on Amazon recently but it had gone back up in price by the time I made up my mind.

Any suggestions? Will be used for gaming and a good bit of data entry (NUM pad essential).

The Rocket Jump Ninja site I linked above has a section on keyboards which may be worth checking out. Eurogamer also did a round-up of mechanical keyboards recently which hit most of the usual recommendations.

Personally, I have a Filco Majestouch 2 at home and a Corsair K65 in work. Would happily recommend either based on your use case, although the K95 is the full sized variant of the Corsair family.

Logitech G910 Orion Spectrum has served me well for a good while now. Really nice keyboard.

I'm using a HyperX Alloy FPS. Nice keyboard, cherry reds but no RGB on it so it ain't for everybody.

Cheers lads. Was looking to spend €100 max and ideally I'd like backlit keys.

Avoid Corsair, their keyboards have known quality issues (just google it).
Get a Coolermaster Masterkeys Pro (M or L) instead.

Don't get this 'Corsair keyboards are rubbish' thing. I've had a K65 for years and have not have one single problem. Best keyboard i've ever owned. And the Coolermaster software is terrible btw.

    I went from a Logitech MX518 to a Corsair M65
Have to say took a bit of getting used to, but love it and would never go back. Each to their own on it.

From looking around, most of the ill-will seems to have been generated by the older K70 series of keyboards?

The price point is a valid complaint though, for what the likes of the K95 goes for, if you don't care about all the extra media keys and the more gamer-orientated lighting options, I don't know why you wouldn't go for a Filco or DAS model. The Filco alone can double as a home protection device given the heft of the bloody thing.

One thing I will say about it though, I can definitely see the benefit of laser etched keys, over the years a couple of my keycaps have begun to fade a bit so I can definitely see them needing to be replaced before the keyboard itself gives out.

I've a set of Double shot keykaps on my Rapidfire. Feels great compared to the stock set.

Any thoughts on MSI keyboards? The GX-701 is reduced to £50 on CCL at the minute.

I've got a CMStorm/Coolermaster Quickfire TK with brown switches which I'm very happy with. Would definitely recommend it to anyone.

I can't comment on their keyboards as I prefer Corsair K70's but the MSI software for controlling lighting effects is an awful clunky mess.

As for the issue's Kiki mentioned regarding Corsair keyboards, having used one for almost 3 years and seen a crazy amount of keyboard reviews, the Corsair's are overall score very good but are very overpriced just like most PC brands. The negative comments in that link are more about the cost and key layout than any design fault issue. Razer keyboards, on the other hand, have a crazy amount of bad feedback regarding build quality on most PC hardware forums and this is coming from someone who is a fan of Razer mice.
