I know Athy is not strictly in Carlow but it is not recognised in the Kildare forum which focuses on issues in North Kildare and Naas. The same goes for Castledermot. Apart from Castledermot Athy is closer to Carlow town than to most towns in Kildare anyway. So here's the issue:

Athy traffic is a nightmare at the best of times but there have been roadworks for about 2 weeks running from 7am to 8pm making life even worse for anyone who has to go into or out of the town. How long will the roadworks go on?

The town gets worse and worse. It literally has nothing going for it except the roads out of it which are unfortunately blocked these days.

I have me own little rat runs to deal with Athy. Wouldn't dream of going through the town during the day, it's insane.
There's an inner relief road planned but will take ages to progress.

Think they are due to last another week - 2 weeks. It's a plague. If you're coming from Carlow you can turn right before the town, go over the bridge at train tracks, take a left at T junction and come out by the Park clinic. From here go to Dub or around by Clanard hotel to come around the back roads to monasterevin road. Longer by quite a bit but you're moving and not stopped in traffic.

Or left over the bridge at 3 counties, over bridge, first right turn and stick on this road all the way, there's two sharp bends at Athy end and you will come out near the industrial park of Athy on Kilkenny road. You can turn into Athy over the bridge and swing a left to get out towards castlemitchell / Portlaoise or down the canal towards Monasterevin.

Thanks. It took ages to get around the roundabout into Athy from the Kilcullen road yesterday at about 6pm. Lunacy.

Why didn't they do this during the school holidays? It would have made a lot more sense.

Yup. If you're coming into Athy from that way everyday, what direction are you going to? Kilkenny side, Carlow or monasterevin?
