One of their better kept secret projects, IE has recently signed a contract with Rolls Royce which will eventually see the entire 22000 Class converted to Hybrid (diesel/battery) sets, this is separate to the Hybrid new build (diesel /electric) fleet and related to the 22000 Transmission Project.

The two 3 car sets that are receiving the new ZF EcoWorld transmissions under the transmission project are also to receive new MTU 6H 1800 (non Hybrid) engines which will be a newer variant of their current 6H 1800 engines. These will be trialled for 12 months after which they will be converted to full Hybrid along with a third additional set converted to Hybrid. If trials are successful the entire 22000 fleet is to be converted.

The project will run alongside the recently announced project with Porterbrook in the UK and both projects will be used to develop the full Hybrid fleet.
