Is it some sort of a euphorbia? Looks more like a garden escapee than a conventional weed, though it looks a bit familiar.

    Euphorbia Lathyris

Be careful with its sap, like with all euphorbias it can be caustic.

That's it exactly! Yes I think it's an attractive looking plant. I have 3 or 4 along a boundary.

I think I'll transplant it to a border...was reluctant to kill the few I did.

    Thanks

Agreed - sometimes called Grannys Bonnet - but they do seed all over the place and you need to keep some control over them! A bit like Forgetmenot - if you have them once you'll have them forever.

Always find that they attract a lot of greenfly too. Not sure if that means there are extra greenfly or if they all head straight to the aquilegeas and leave everything else alone.....

A weed is just a flower growing in the wrong place.
