    Just that....

Is it possible to have a single thread for 3d Printers?

At the moment, you could find threads in Engineering, Computers & Technology, Art & Design, and probably others.

I reckon the concept of 3D Printing is sufficiently important as to merit a high- level category on Boards for itself. It is argued that, instead of buying actual products in the future, ppl will buy a right/license to use, receive a complete spec including editable CAD/printing instructions, and users will produce the required item at home. (Please, lets not get into an argy/bargy about whether this is socially right or not, with closing shops and all that; leave that to somewhere else...)

Sub- categories will ultimately be opened for Art & Design, Internal Workings, Hacking & Mods, Materials & Methods, Current Products, Great Deals on Printers, Parts & Materials, Developments on the Horizon, and probably others...

Just a thought from someone who is sooo frustrated with trying to get into this field and find its all over the place...

Just as I've stumbled across this, as ED E says the forum requests forum is a good place to float the idea and allows the community to offer their support. Should it gain enough support, we can get the wheels rolling on getting a forum up and running.

Existing activity is also a good way for us (and other posters) to gauge if a topic would be able to sustain a forum - more forums allows for more discussion topics, but it doesn't look great if the forum is very quiet. There is a circular pattern too where users need content to be drawn in and encouraged to post, but you need users to create that content in the first place. It's certainly an important topic, and something that will grow in interest and availability, but it's activity more than importance that justifies a dedicated forum for the most part.

While 3D Printing could be covered in a variety of different areas, it's good to see these threads popping up, even if it is across the board. You can also help kickstart that with the creation and maintenance of threads, and hopefully we can build an active and enthusiastic community :)
