Hi all. Looking to change careers and get into accountancy. Currently in shift work and thinking of utilising flexible route with chartered accountants ireland. Is there any way of gaining access or purchasing study material for all the cap 1 subjects prior to enrolling. Sorry if this seems like a silly question and thanks in advance

I'd say your best option is to pick up a basic double entry book keeping book. I went into CAP 1 with no prior experience at all and found that to be the best way to get going. Leaving cert, even Junior Cert books would be a good start.

Leaving cert, as far as I know, teaches some things incorrectly so wouldn't advise going on leaving cert books.

Have a look in the books for sale/wanted thread. Everyone who does the course gets the full set of books included in the cost of it so I'd say there's a load of people who have all the books and want rid of them - especially people who've just gotten their results passing FAEs yesterday. A lot of people will be clearing out books now as they aren't needed for reference for any further exams, whereas current CAP2/FAE students will hang onto them because the course is cumulative (this year there was 1st year management accounting on the FAE exam, as an example).

It's not a hard course, anyone who's reasonable academically won't struggle, especially once you get a really good grounding in double entry. Cannot emphasize how important it is to really "get" double entry. You cannot spend too much time making sure you understand it.
