Anyone have life advice re. nice intern jobs 2019. Or ones to avoid? I’m final year GEM, a bit older than average, interested in paeds/psych/Emergency. Obviously planning on avoiding ortho purely because of the hours. Currently thinking Connolly but that’s because I’ve not been in Mater or James so clueless.

    Any advice welcome!

I'm a final med applying for a 2019 internship and looking for some advice. I had been thinking of James' based on the 2018 rotations, but I've never been there. Can anyone offer any info?
I've been on rotation in Connolly recently, and the surgical interns there seem relatively relaxed, fwiw.

Don't worry too much about the jobs you get for intern year, it doesn't have that much of an effect on your future career if you don't get a job you want. Having just finished intern year, my advice is to try get jobs that you've heard are nice and relaxed and avoid the crazy mental jobs like ortho. The more relaxed your job, the more it gives you a chance to do stuff that will actually help your career like research or audits.

Finally, don't let preconceived notions about a consultant ruin your time with him. I had a consultant who was widely said to be a tyrant to work for and who snapped at anything. I made sure I had everything spot on every morning and thoroughly enjoyed my 3 months with him!

I've posted stuff about this previously, but will give a quick recap.

Depending on what you want to do as an SHO, its useful to do those related jobs in the first six months. E.g. if you want to do surgery, its useful to have a surgical reference for your application to the surgical BST. Is this essential? Absolutely not. Can't hurt though.

Other than that, do think about where the hospital is located. I've never worked in Connolly, but have driven past it. It strikes me as difficult to get to without a car, especially post-call, though that could be different if you live in Blanch!

A city-centre hospital is a good idea in my opinion, whether that be Dublin or Galway (I've no idea about the geography of Limerick or Cork!). The reason I say this, is that it makes it easier to get home post-call, and allows for greater socialisation (is that a word?). I was in Vincent's, and having a nice pub nearby and easy access to the city centre did make for a fairly 'social' intern year. Now from speaking to my friends who went to the peripherals and they seemed to be happy too.

Ortho in Vincent's was a joke. I didn't do it, but I remember being on call and seeing the ortho interns still there at 8-9pm doing jobs. The money was great though, so don't discount that either.

At the end of the day, it probably doesn't matter. Most of your work as an intern is absolute nonsense. What I will say, and it carries over to BST and HST, is that you can't beat the experience you get in a busy centre. The NHS is seeing this in some specialities, where trainees work in a small trust for their entire training scheme.

To be completely honest, I picked Vinnie's because my friends were going there, it was easy to get to from my house, and it had the job I wanted. In that order :pac:

    Hope that helps!
