Marching against democracy in a democratic country, how strange. However, their marching doesn't matter a jot as Brexit is coming whether they like it or not.

    embarrassing comment really

The flow of people coming in was constant. So much so that I missed the speakers despite arriving on time.

Real democracy is ensuring people make an informed decision. They are now in a position to do that.

Direct democracy requires and expects electorate to educate themselves and to be informed. Without that it ceases to function and it becomes a rule of the mob.

Neither of the two prerequisites were fulfilled in the case of the Brexit referendum. That is very evident.

Direct democracy does not work perfectly even in Switzerland with highly educated and politically engaged electorate. How it could work well in UK where the political discourse is set by toxic media and an arrogant political class.

    It's pretty obvious I thought-maybe I'm mistaken.

More police, and probably police horses, than marchers.

I expect they still produce impartial accurate assessments but with the way society is nowadays they just can’t be arsed with all the grief that will inevitably be levelled at them on social media from both sides. It’s a shame that those of us still capable of behaving with civility won’t get important and interesting details like that in the news now as a result

Tony Connelly piece describing the history of the backstop, the backstop to the backstop, and where things currently are. Updated today, so Tony should be in fine form for the Andrew Marr show tomorrow. I expect, though, that the Marr show won't do much other than show whatever Brexiteer they have on to be uninformed and belligerent.

Connelly also points out all the missed 'must meet' deadlines in the negotiations, too. Nice job by him

What a bunch of spanners. Has Brexit pulled the rug out from the likes of the EDL, or have their supporters moved onto another far-right movement?

Not in the slightest. What is embarrassing however, is that 17.4 million people voted for Brexit and yet the losers are refusing to accept it.

So making an ill informed choice and when given the facts, being unable to change your mind, sounds fair? The will of the people can change, and should be respected.

It's not been a good week for the Brexiteers at all. Bad news story after bad news story and now that march today which is making headlines across Europe.

Just about everything that can go wrong on them is going wrong.

So democracy stops the day of the vote?

What if 99% of the public was now opposed to it? They still have to go through with it, for the sake of 'democracy'?

    What a curious notion.

Long may it continue. They won with lies and BS and have absolutely no interest in the common good. They deserve to be cruficied over this until they buckle and give up trying to wreck things for the sake of their petty egos.

Most of Europe has long since lost interest in what they do.

If there was to be a second referendum and the UK reversed its decision would it have to renegotiate terms to remain in the EU at this stage. Particularly in relation to rebates, the euro etc or could they simply abandon brexit, withdraw article 50 and forget about the chaos caused over the last two years.

Agree on that, but I suppose one implication of the march today is that it may stiffen EU resolve even further against the Brexiteers. They know they are dealing with a hard right / far right cabal who may be under siege as we speak.

They don't represent the future of the UK and could well have left the stage within a couple of years.

Sunday Telegraph saying that Dominic Raab is telling the EU to drop the backstop if they want extension of the transition period.

Can't see the EU agreeing to that!

But the transition period is there for Britain's interest.

Yeah, but the only way for Brexiters to agree to it is to convince themselves that the EU are requesting the longer transition out of fear of crumbling European markets in the wake of the only country with an economy leaving etc. So hard as they're concerned they're being asked for two concessions. Or so the likes of Raab would infer.

All I can think at this point is that the sooner they're out of the EU the better.

Is this the first time the UK has openly tried to abandon a prior commitment? There is a difference between trying to redefine what you have agreed to and trying to walk away from your prior agreements altogether.

We all know they want to walk away from the backstop, but it is quite significant that they are publicly calling for something they have formally agreed to be dropped. This is the kind of thing that may prompt a final breakdown in talks.

Is the Brexit that those 17.4 million people are going to get the Brexit they voted for?

    I'm inclined to agree.
They need to feel the pain to realise the mistake. Then they'll come back with their tail between their legs (and with a few richer Tories)!
