Is crossing a ball that hard?

In fairness, Long is a better player than he gets to show in an Ireland shirt. He's just totally isolated up front alone, with long balls randomly lumped up to his general area to fight 2 or 3 other lads for. He's not a good finisher, but he's a better footballer than we see in green. Maybe if we actually tried to set up to use his attributes we might actually see something.

In fairness, how come he doesn’t show it for Southampton either then??

Decision making non-existent. McClean ignores the overlap to pass across to Duffy who has a shot while falling over

    Christie gives it away again.

Posting crap about the FAI on boards, twitter or a journalist doing it in a paper is meaningless. It has no affect on the FAI. People still show up for games and buy all the crap merchandise.

Remember back when we could score goals and people used to have a moan at Robbie Keane because he shouted and waved his arms a lot? Good times.

McClean isnt a good footballer. Passionate but thats it.
I think James is a great summary of Irish football in general, and I speak as a Derry fan who watched him in the Brandywell.

He will always give 100%, each and every game.

But he isn't the most gifted technically. He will run all day and gets the odd cross in, but he'll never beat a player with skill. Just graft.

Spirit, heart, graft, sweat. We'll win the odd game when our backs are against the wall, but it'll be 1 in 20 or so. Think the night we beat Germany.

But we usually lose when we deserve to. Technically most countries are better than us. Their kids are taught to play football better at a young age.

And to add to our MVP being a grafter, we bring in a manager who still thinks it's the 80s. Crazy gang football and all. And his sidekick who wants to appear as a character and funny all the time. But who is tactically naive, like his boss.

It is not a recipe for success.

Well the government don't help either. Have you ever listened to Delaney's trips into the Sports sub committee in Leinster house?

    It's parody stuff.

Would be nice to hear John Delaney give his thoughts on the status quo but the FAI don't talk to journalists, do they?

I don't blame the management. I blame the FAI top brass.

Delaney the useless sponge should go and all his cronies at the top.

Open up the FAI finances. Hire quality coaches. Support the LoI.

We got away with it for long enough. Must be the only 'top' football association team in the world that has been happy for a different country to recruit, train and produce the players in our team. We have to start doing it ourselves.

How come he keeps getting a game at a PL club with other options?

Because their other options are just as bad. What has he now, 2 goals in 65 games?? Wouldn’t be bad for a centre half, but he’s supposed to be a centre forward.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,468 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

Crossing is definitely beyond the capabilities of every single one of them

John Delaney amd the fai have ruined soccer in Ireland. Set it back years.

MON is a side effect of that.

But what we have been subjected to over the last 18 months has been disgraceful.

MON. All about pay offs and no pride. How could you oversee amd justify that ****e.

The FAI's reliance on hoping the English league randomly throws up enough players has inevitably led to this point. The number of Premier league regulars is now down to barely more than 6 and virtually none in the top half of the table and by next season will be fewer again.

BTW, if you don't or won't support our own domestic league, then you can't really have any complaints either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

In fairness, how come he doesn’t show it for Southampton either then??

He does... as I said he's not a good goal scorer, but he does enough good work beyond that that he's been starting for them more often than not so far this season. And when he does't start, he's usually the one to come on.

In the context of our team of misfits, he's in a better position than most with his club career.

I think if the attendance was less than 10,000 it still wouldn't make enough difference to change things at the top. So moaning about it is all most people can do.

The fact that this game is on Sky behind a paywall is a disgrace too.

Is the 38,321 actually people through the gate tonight or does it include all the season tickets. We have three season tickets and none of us are there tonight.

How many of the Welsh players came through the League of Wales?

Different situation entirely. Half of them are English born to Welsh parents. There's no problem with that as they are both British countries and share a land border.

There's a f*cking sea between ourselves and the UK yet we expect them to develop our players from the age of 13.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,067 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

In fairness, how come he doesn’t show it for Southampton either then??

Well no striker shows for Southampton and with there way of playing 1 striker up front with everyone 30 yards behind it is a thankless job. Long works very hard and put in a shift and makes players mark him

That's a killer loss, that. They hadn't got their talisman Bale, hadn't got Ramsey or Ampadu, and they could have beaten us by two or three with better finishing.

We're in a sorry state. Everything is wrong. O'Neill and Keane will depart but the system will still be in bits thanks to Delaney. We've some decent U-19 players coming through but they'll wind up in the hands of Noel King.

    So, so depressing.

This ! At this level for football that international players cannot find anything approaching a decent delivery over 90 minutes.... we created fućk all...against a much depleted Wales...at home...youd literally see more quality in the LOI,

  • Registered Users Posts: 422 ✭✭RickyOFlaherty

Cyrus Christie...centre midfield....did he play a forward pass all night? Why not play an actual centre midfield player? I thought Keane's mantra was every pass should be a forward one

That was low... but at the same time, look at that teamsheet. We were playing well below our potential ability there, so there was genuine hope someone else could do something with that team. Keane, Duff, Dunne, Finnan, O'Shea... even Kilbane and McGeady when playing at their best.

Whereas you look at our team now, and ya just can't see things getting much better any time soon... there's more of a sense that "this is our life now".

just do what i did, start following the league of ireland, much more enjoyable, better style of football played by some of the teams than a team managed by martin and roy.

I wouldn’t even have watched the match if it was on RTÉ. Literally all that has to be done to force change, is stop going to and watching the matches. Honestly, forget just about the senior team coach and management, don’t watch it again until Delaney goes ...

I don't know, but it's not particularly relevant all the same. Wales have two clubs at the top tables of the English League.

Actually, at Shamrock Rovers, the club has developed two current players (Stevens/Burke) and possible future international goalie Bazunu. And the Rovers Academy will hopefully bring Irish football to the next level.

PS: why not go to Tallaght Stadium this Friday and you'll see much better football than what was suffered tonight.

O'Neill & Keane need to go asap.

2 dinosaurs. I know we have not got a great squad but we can certaintly perform much better than how we are right now.

Arter was poor. He gave away the free that lead to the goal and in general he was poor throughout. Might have been better if he didn't come back, but imagine if he didn't the usual lot of moaners on here would be on with "Keane is the fault of Arter not being available and probably Rice as well etc. etc....." Yawn.

Ok the Stan appointment was a disaster but since then they have had Trapp and MON

Trapp was obviously a world class manager and many many people were happy with MON getting the job when he did

So what did the FAI top brass do wrong when it came to the last two managerial appointments again ?
