Why? This is fun for me.

Why do people who go on a discussion site get so upset when they get 'discussion'?
I have no idea of your circumstances, if you fail to respond to me, am I shouting that you are afraid/have run away? No, I await your reply.
But if I reply instantly, because I am never without a device to connect to the internet (it is for business primarily btw, not to talk to you guys) there is something wrong or sinister or I am in the employ of some political party or other. Have you any idea how tedious that argument is?
Lads, tech is here, you can stay connected all day and night if you want.

You havent had such fun since the bould McElduff hoyed the Kingsmill pan up the noggin, I’ll opine?

Aaah … … the good auld days.

He must have private polling indicating traction?

I listened to the RTE 1 o'clock news. I think there was genuine surprise at the avalanche of texts in favour of P. Casey. Kinda shows just how little these people know about the real world.

Secondly, a question. If Casey does pull out but still gets a massive amount of votes, is there any danger that those votes will be lumped in with the spoiled votes and we will never know the figure ? Technically speaking they could be called spoiled votes as the candidate was not running.

He can't pull out. It's too late.

I'll tell you why I'm voting Casey.

A friend of mine ran a business in the midlands and made the mistake pre boom of putting his house up as personal guarantee when buying a new premises to move in to. Pre boom he was paying a fortune in taxes, as every business did. He calculated it in millions over the successful years. Post boom all the staff have gone and the bank have him on the hook for his house. He paid off all creditors but couldn't shut the place down because they will take his house. So they keep him there doing the small bits of work that come in, and now that the house prices are back up again, they want him to remortgage his house at the higher value and pay that off for the rest of his life. Contrast that to the Traveller families who have never worked a day in their lives getting 1.7 million euro houses built for free, as well as having their every daily need taken care off through dole / benefits/free healthcare. That doesn't sound to me like a fair and equal society, that sounds to me like the deck is stacked in favour of one group over another.

I read books on achievement by Brian Tracy, Grant Cardone, Mike Pettigrew and others people. And one core message that they give is that you must accept full responsibility for your own situation before you can improve things for yourself. This is in complete contrast to the message that we hear from Government / Radio / Media these days which seems to be that if you are part of a minority, then that alone is a valid excuse for you to essentially not try at all and be supported by somebody else. This is neither good for the person themselves or for society as a whole. And don't let this post make you think that I am unsympathetic towards young Travellers, but their difficulties in getting employment is mostly because of the reputation they have garnered for themselves. Let's be frank here.. the State can continue to be bend over backwards to support Travellers, but their situation will never change unless they at least make some attempt to improve it themselves.

Really appealing to the After Hours crowd. He's had a go at Travellers. He's had a go at those on welfare. All he's short is having a hop off Atari Jaguar owners.

Why should they change? They seemfairly content as they are

RTE and a lot of other newspaper sites have big headlines about Micky D been so far ahead in the polls, which was taken last Tuesday. Why I do believe he is still way ahead in the polls it just seems lazy or they want to emphasise the fact he is so far ahead in case another starts building momentum.

Of course. A deliberate strategy of "give me more headlines"

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

And casey is going to fix this? How so?

Anthony, just because your friend in the Midlands was a useless businessman you're laying into Travellers?

Can you not see the irony here? What did you want the banks to do? And all the creditors that got stung? Go pull the other one, come on. If anything he should have been out on his ear as early as possible. That type of behaviour causes much more misery than any average traveller ever would.

Did I ever claim he has? Come on lol

Look the president is a figurehead, imo casey would be an embarrassment, Michael D is the opposite like he has shown up til now

    It doesn't matter.
The anti Casey people trotting out the argument that the president is powerless top effect that much change really just don't get it. Everybody knows the role isn't an active role in irish politics.

although as president he can refuse to sign a bill or refer a bill to the council of state for review on constitutionality . so not completely powerless.

But it's better to have a president we believe in that a smoked salmon socialist like Higgins or somebody else who is as dull as ditchwater i.e. the others.

It's much better to have a president you can relate to than not.

Look folks, can we all accept that none of the candidates can do anything about major issues affecting the country. They can talk all they want in their little 60sec clips on debates about homelessness, suicide, hospital waiting lists, whatever, but they can do next to nothing to fix any major issue.

They are only a figure head for 7 years.

I jest of course. Alas, Michael D's Christmas speech about the homeless crisis (in front of the banquet that Santa had left for him) did not fix the homeless issue. The point is that no matter who is voted in as President, they can do nothing more than shake hands with scrum halves and open charity shops. So even if Casey was a disaster as you suggest, there is nothing that he can do that would be detrimental to the country. This vote is a free throw, so to speak. Personally, I think the role should be done away with, but we aren't getting that choice

And what do you think Casey and president will do to change any of that?

If anything, someone like Casey might actually bring more jobs here, especially to rural parts of the country as he is campaigning for rural Ireland.

If he has contacts like he says he has, maybe a foreign trip here and there, speak to the right people who are looking to set up somewhere, you never know.
