I've hardly been on the thread for two days. At the event I was at I would say I maybe engaged with about 500 people in total.
There really isn't a big conversation going on about all this.

I am genuinely finding social media very unusual about this. Only comments are 'hope this is all over soon' 'bored' and 'all a bunch of ...'

In my experience this election doesn't seem to have captured the public imagination.

Most I've talked to tend to bunch "the dragons" together.

I think it's because the main parties are not directly involved.

People who don't take a big interest in politics appear to be uncertain about where most of the candidates are coming from.

MDH has a big advantage having been there for the last seven years.

A low turnout is probably a sure thing here. I don't believe people who have not bothered coalescing into some sort of political lobby in response to a 'plague' of traveller crime and misbehaviour that has 'towns and villages on their knees' will bother their arses going to vote. It would be a first....Friday is going to be bitter cold too.

'Everyone' mentioned again in relation to Casey. :)

I have said before that I have worked hard to have a cross section of opinion on my social media.
The unique thing about this election is that nibody seems interested in it at all.

So 'everyone' is clearly a deluded stretch tbh.

Almost 5k posts in this thread alone in just a week.

Covered non stop on every radio station, newspaper and social media platforms non stop since was asked his opinion on a certain subject.

    C'mon Francie.

    You don't believe that.

Last nights election debate was watched by almost 900,000. Huge engagement across social media platforms also.

Pulling a kid out of school early, with resulting poor literacy is wrong. Every day of the week. Morally and socially. Should be criminally wrong too.

I would agree, but as far as I am aware there is law that makes it compulsory for children to go to school or be home schooled.
If they made the law so that it was compulsory for everyone to stay until leaving cert, then it would be a crime to take them out & something could be done about it.

I would imagine there will be a smaller turnout for this Election and Referendum - the general public doesn't really seem to be too enthralled by the election - I'd say if no-one had complained initially most would have been happy with the status quo and leave Micheal D as president for another 7 years. Why not? He's represented Ireland very well, he's intelligent, not religious (a bonus in my eyes), well read, and literary.

The Peter Casey support is interesting, and it's not driven by a bunch of right-wing racists - as many would call it - It's about someone standing up and saying it plainly, I don't agree with Peter Casey's stance on the traveller community but I admire him for not being afraid to give his point of view in a time when it's very hard to do that. When did it become so difficult to raise your head up and say well actually I have a different opinion? Who is ruling the agenda all the time? Why are we getting more news stories about Trump in America, then political stories from home on our own TV networks?

I am left wing and would consider myself liberal but I'm very uneasy about the way leftist politics has wandered into the extremes, it's beginning to meet the conservative pulpiteers on its journey to the ridiculous.

I believe the normal people who post political opinions are here and were joined by those who seem attracted to threads about travellers or topics veering close to right wing kneejerk opinions. No doubt Casey has stirred it here and in other selected places, but I am genuinely seeing very little comment from the public on my feeds and zero out and about.
    Maybe I am unique.

It could be interrupted as the “normal people” who shatter your point of view. Meaning those who don’t share your viewpoint are not normal people or abnormal.
It’s a common way to label people. Another is “right thinking people”.

Watching that debate, most of em were lying trying to be politically correct we all know the score just cant say it these days because its frowned upon, They loved it when ur man said travelers are the same race as us and shouldn't get favoritism, the blonde woman was nearly falling over herself in an attempt to express fake outrage...

The worst of the lot tho was the 3 clowns that were trying to discredit micheal D, and the best they could come up with was the use of a plane..jesus wept.. the man was in office 7 years and had one.. questionable trip.Honestly an embarrassing attempt to drum up abit of outrage to get him to lose votes its pathetic to see how low they ll stoop.

It's already a law that children stay in school until the age of 16.
Traveller children tend to leave early probably because the father doesn't enforce the values of education.
You won't find too many people complaining that they're not attending though for reasons that we can probably guess. These kids are hard to control and don't suffer any consequences from their parents usually. The Education Welfare Officers and Home School Liaison teachers also seem to turn a blind eye to it.

On here we are for the most part anonymous and use that freedom to say a lot more about politics than someone you might encounter in the course of your day.

Some days I'm a bit like a hermit other days I meet a broad cross section of people.

As I said from what I have gleaned talking face to face with people most of them tend to bunch the dragons together. A lot don't take them seriously and say things like "aren't they gas". I think one dragon might have done better, three of them tends to confuse the casual observer.

The two women seem to suffer from the same problem albeit to a lesser degree. You'll get people comparing them against each other rather than the other contenders.

After seven years not really offending anyone MDH appears to be surfing a wave of brand recognition rather than genuine enthusiasm for his offering.

Like I say just an observation. Make of it what you will

I think it has been over long before the debates even began.
The debates are great craic though and for me Casey has been a breath of fresh air with his straight talking, nothing PC about him at all. He has opened up debate on Traveller and entitlement issues and that's a great thing as he stands up for the Middle income worker who is keeping the country going unlike the usual bunch of "don't stir Shyt" lefties .

Michael D must have some hell of a pension coming for his 40 years in politics as a socialist warrior.

What has he actually achieved in those 40 years of note apart from mixing it up with failed socialists and shaking hands with the elite?

There is no 'debate; taking place about traveller or entitlement issues, all Casey succeeded in inciting was the usual bile and hate.
Totally unproductive in the scheme of things. And just forces people behind their various barricades. Totally irresponsible for a public rep to do that. Plain gobdaw speaking rather than plain speaking.

But before the election campaign started I genuinely liked MDH and thought he did a decent job. Now I can't stand the pompous so and so.

You’re right and I find it pretty sad. If they think it’s all a joke, they shouldn’t vote in the first place ... there is nothing funny about this state being run by failed politicians and vested interests, while joe taxpayer is simply seen as a potential vote and cash cow!

No democracy is EVER going to give a select group or individual the right to decide where their taxes are spent and on whom.

Casey never had any business saying you or anyone else could. He has tried to broaden it out to the welfare state but that message is as incoherent as his incitement one.

Of course he sparked a public debate, to deny that is ludicrous. People are talking about the issues he raised in public and private. Also, unlike some of the other candidates he is not a public representative like you said.
