They're not.

There are lots of reason to vote for a candidate, thinking they'll implement policy is not one of them.

But it shows policy makers there is a will to tackle welfare amongst some of the country at least.

Or else it shows policy makers that a proportion of the electorate will fall easily enough for Trump style divide-and-conquer tactics that point fingers at people and issues that have nothing to do with the election in question.

Nothing fundamentally against his character but for me he is too old and at 77 I don't think I am being ageist in saying that.

President has feck all political power but is a figurehead. So it is an important position in terms of diplomatic relations and perception of the country. If a politician's concern is local and in local politics, he won't care so much about who is President.



If the parties were that interested in that position then they would all run candidates. They don't because they don't care. SF didn't even brand their candidate this time around.




So if you want to "use" your vote as a protest to send a message to the "political classes" then it is better to do it at a level that won't embarrass the country but would have an actual impact on the political parties. Start with the council elections next year

I too am very surprised at this thread, that people are choosing the President based on politics? I gave #1 for Higgins based on him being better suited to the role. I will be voting for politics in the next election.

True, sadly true. There's a political depression as of late. Which is a shame, you'd think in light of repealing the 8th and the marriage referendum, more people would be politically enthusiastic.
Probably isn't helping that the weather is also incredibly sh**e today.

Exit polls have been very reliable in the past here, even on contentious issues.

No reason to expect different here .

One thing to note was that there was no sign of desperation from the MDH campaign in the last few days, nor have odds moved today I think?

MDH won't be defenestrated from the early signs I'm seeing.

There’s a media moriatorum in place at the moment, they can’t talk about it. Not until the polls close I think.

If you’re referring to the overall election campaign, then I think it’s fair to say that it’s been a field of moderate to weak candidates at best. No wonder people aren’t interested.
