Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The death knell of the FA Cup was the launch of Champions League group stages in 1994/1995.

Great idea. Hope 3 plus and FA Cup spot

    How?
The group stages of the CL end in mid December & the FA Cup 3rd round starts in early January.

I would love a CL spot aswell to raise the cup. I think it was more when they added CL spots for 2nd place etc that started to effect the FA Cup!

Let’s not forget the English FA themselves undermining the FA cup in 2000 by forcing the defending champions at the time, to pull out of it so they could boost their World Cup bid....

In 1993/1994, the Champions League/European Cup contained just the national champion and it was knockout. Galatasaray eliminated Manchester United in September 1993. The FA Cup was unaffected.

Since 1998, there have been multiple teams allowed from the same country. The League and Champions League are intense from August to early December.

The Champions League knockout stages begin again in February. Around the time of the FA Cup 5th round. Clubs are focusing their strongest XI on the League and Champions League.

With four slots available in England, nobody is bothered with the FA Cup anymore. It's a real shame.

Surely everyone has noticed the FA Cup squads are miles weaker than the mid 1990s? It could be revitalised if the 4th League spot was given to the FA Cup instead.

Can't be done as it's a UEFA rule that CL spots can only be awarded based on league position.
I doubt UEFA will see any need to change that just to satisfy some nostalgia the English have for the FA Cup.

Could have been worse for Spurs. At least nobody got injured.

It is an idea that has been floating about for years. So hardly original. Besides it will inevitably only be one of the top 6 clubs that will benefit. I honestly can't see it doing anything significant to improve the cup.

I’d say it’s more down to what the big clubs want as opposed to Uefa. Remember , the reason there is more spots for the CL is to appease the big euro clubs...

Peno to Sheffield Wednesday. Looks harsh. Maybe VAR will intervene.

    It has intervened. Decision overturned.

    It did. Drop ball

Ampadu got to the ball and the Wednesday player's kicked him as he followed through. Good to see they got it right.

    Peno to Chelsea now!

    No doubt about that one.

And Willian sends Westwood the wrong way. 1-0 Chelsea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,465 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

How come Sheffield did not even get the corner though? He gave a drop ball, surely when chelsea player did clear it and not give away a penalty the corner should have been giving.

restarting the game after VAR was always going to be a problem, it seems they haven't sorted it.

It has clearly had an impact on the game and the Wednesday players too.

It's farcical that it's only at a selection of games in the same competition.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Hudson-Odoi scores to make it 2-0. Westwood could have done better with that.

And Willian puts it to bed with a class finish. 3-0.

Sure they removed the runners up getting the Europa League spot and gave it to the league. UEFA want the top teams in

I think he is talking about Sheffield FC the oldest football club in the world who play in like the 2nd to last tier in the English football pyramid. So if he is to count them he should also count Hallam FC as they are the 2nd oldest team in football so that would make four and not three teams in Sheffield

I thought he'd be referring to Sheffield FC. There are probably dozens and dozens of teams in Sheffield if he's counting Sheffield FC.

    Draw at 7pm on BBC1.

Hoping for United v Barnet/Brentford and obviously avoid City.

EDIT: It’s actually 7.20. Apologies to anyone who has just watched ten minutes of The One Show.

Hopefully Millwall v Chelsea so we can see the first FA Cup tie to kick off at 7am on a Tuesday Morning.

Wedged in between home games against PSG and Liverpool. Contract for Ole if he wins those three.

No replays from this round onwards either.

London's finest must be relieved that West Ham fcuked up at the weekend. At home to Millwall would have left Stratford looking like Aleppo!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,239 ✭✭✭Jimbob1977

    The draw

1 Bristol City v Shrewsbury Town or Wolverhampton Wanderers
    2 AFC Wimbledon v Millwall
3 Doncaster Rovers v Crystal Palace
4 Middlesbrough or Newport County v Manchester City
    5 Chelsea v Manchester United
6 Swansea City v Barnet or Brentford
7 Portsmouth or Queens Park Rangers v Watford
8 Brighton & Hove Albion or West Bromwich Albion v Derby County

There can be no Manchester league derby on 16th March if either club win in the 5th round. 6th round pencilled in.

I'd say a few hot and cold balls might have influenced Millwall missing Chelsea or West Ham. :o

Would have been very "interesting" to see what would have happened if it was Millwall v Chelsea at the Den and how the Met would approach it.

Another bad round for the higher ranked teams. The following “underdogs” (based on league position) all won.

    Manchester United
    Millwall
    AFC Wimbledon
    Crystal Palace

And the following all earned replays

    West Bromwich Albion
    Newport County
    Portsmouth
    Shrewsbury Town
    Barnet

Only 7 of the 16 higher ranked teams went straight through to fifth round.

I'd say the old order could have reasserted itself by the qfs though. Could easily see six prem teams and two championship ones in the last eight.

Was hoping to see Randolph in goal for Middlesbrough tonight away to Newport but it seems he's not in the squad. Padraig Amond and Mark O'Brien are in the Newport XI.
