Xiaomi expanding to UK / Ireland

    Interesting:

    https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/10/26/xiaomi-expanding-uk-market-november-8th/
It's the fourth largest smartphone brand on the planet, and yet Xiaomi doesn't directly sell devices in some of the biggest markets such as the US and the UK. There have been rumors about an entry into the US market late this year or in early 2019, but before that, the Chinese company is officially launching in the UK on November 8th.

This follows a successful expansion into the Spanish, French, and Italian markets already this year. During an event in London, Xiaomi will show off an unspecified flagship phone — hopefully, the intriguing Mi Mix 3 — as well as a range of smart home hardware alongside a proprietary IoT platform. An Authorized Mi Store will then open on November 10th in Westfield Shopping Centre in White City.

Sales and Marketing Director Wilkin Lee will head up the Xiaomi UK team, and its chosen UK charity partner is Right To Play. As part of the launch, the team will also be hosting a Mi Community London treasure hunt on October 27th.

Posted in the Chinese Android Device thread!

Xiaomi officially launching in Ireland on November 1st

Wonder what devices and cost involved with three?

    corkie wrote: »
Don't get too excited, when launched in Denmark, they only had a limited range at an inflated prices tied to 6 month contract.

Not everyone has the price of even a €400 handset, easier to pay a nominal sum and the rest monthly

Xiaomi are all Dual Sim setups, what will 3 do about that?

If three are still locking there devices to there Network? They in theory could disable the second sim (or have only one operational) by software.

If they do above, then unlocking the bootloader and flashing a stock/custom rom, would be away to get around it.

I thought there was EU rules, not allowing SIM locks anymore.
    http://europa.eu/rapid/press-release_IP-96-791_en.htm

For three to lock the device, they would require a vendor/seller rom on the device.

article in indo. 3 phones at launch. prices not too bad. assume locked to three?

    sellling an electric scooter also

This is why some people are terrible with money.

The financially smart thing is to save up for the "400 euro" phone and then buy cash rather than pay interest through billpay. You can get a great phone for half that price anyways..

    Prices sound unexpectedly reasonable...

I hope this doesn't mean it'll be more difficult to get their phones through customs and I hope they don't charge customs on irish price rather than chinese site price....but I expect they will?

Pity there's no Mi 8 or Mi Mix 3 but as others have said, the prices look reasonably good all things considered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,657 ✭✭✭corkie

Prices look good if they include VAT.

RN5 @ €199 is not bad if it is for 64gb model and not the 32gb.

Since Mi Mix 2S @ (€459) is approx 30 dearer (not including shipping) than honorbuy.

Get an invoice from wherever you buy incase you get caught with customs, highly doubt they can throw your invoice out and tax you off a different sellers rate

they will still be available online - no doubt about that.

if the prices are similar may be worth buying in local b&m as warranty would be more likely to be fully honoured.

But others add up the price that the person is paying per month and decide that's what they paid for the phone. If someone buys their own phone and gets a sim for a network, they don't get unlimited data and minutes without paying.

I was in Westfield shopping centre at the weekend. Its a full shop unit they have (it's still covered by hoarding) . So presumably they'll have a good range of their products and not just a couple of phones on a stand in the middle of an empty unit.

    Edit, forgot I took a pic :)

Once they don't limit access delivery to Ireland it's no harm, products are generally good and good value.

Prices are sure competitive, Bluetooth Headset and Speaker about approx €5 dearer than online.

Redmi note 5, if the 64gb WHYRED is going at a good price, question still remain if network locked and duel sim functionality?

The Pace Smartwatch is twice that I paid including EU shipping

The shop is in London. Not sure if any more are planned and don't know if they are selling through a network in the UK as well.

Youd have thought they'd go for the same approach here as the UK and open their own shop in Dundrum or something

As suspect 32gb model of WHYRED which is overpriced.

183 on eglobal for 64gb version

    146 for 32gb version

so 33% higher on the 32gb version than eglobal or 25% lower than Three

sort of understandable tho considering eglobal is paying no VAT

Had a play with the Mi Mix 2s in store on lunch. Very impressed and MIUI seems fine. I think it's convinced me to go for the Mi 8,couldn't be dealing with the Mi Mix 2's upside down selfie camera every time!

Does unlocking Bootloader on MI devices void warranty?
    No!

Xiaomi is developers friendly. Your warranty is not void even you unlock your bootloader and root your mobile.

If you wanna be more safe. Then you can flash stock firmware and lock your bootloader again at any time to bring back your mobile to factory state.

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-5-pro/help/unlocking-bootloader-void-warranty-t3790342

Unless Three has some additional terms or maybe a vendor rom, which would make unlocking harder.

You have to flash carrier ROM and lock bootloader before bringing it back to Three, there is no other option, AFAIK.
Will you be able to flash it when it is already faulty ?
Another thing, if XIOAMI will ever proceed your request to
    unlock bootloader on Three phones?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭alec76

It seems to be DUAL phone with no network lock
    https://www.three.ie/brand/xiaomi/xiaomi-redmi-6/
.The Xiaomi Redmi 6 is dual sim. This means you can enjoy Three's All You Can Eat Data at home in Ireland but also use a local SIM while travelling without missing any calls to your Irish number.

You no longer need to request permission for unlock from xiaomi. Just create an Mi account and you can unlock a new device after 720/360 hours (or whatever waiting time is now).

Bootloader unlock only works on official MIUI roms, if it has a carrier/vendor rom then unlocking may not be possible.

Waiting on a reply for multiple queries in the Three Thread.

Mediatek device? Generally avoid them devices.

On the three page for the device: -

Even if the primary sim is locked, the additional sim should work for other networks.

Also it is the 3/32gb version, get the 4/64gb version on honorbuy for the same price (excl.. shipping).

mediatek cpus in the device. usually weak and not battery efficient

although the p22 is not that bad

but I'd order the mi a2 lite 64gb from eglobal instead for 162 euro

same design but better phone with stock android so no bloat apps and regular security updates. battery is 1/3 bigger than redmi 6 also

    better cpu also

blue best colour. .no customs charges as goes through EU but wait of 7 to 10 days usually

Was playing with a MiMix 2s today in a Three store, the manager had a one for herself and was just setting it up so let me play around with the camera a bit. Lovely phone, gorgeous screen even though it's LCD, camera seems pretty damned good.

Mi Mix 2S is a duel sim phone, like the RN5 and Redmi 6.

Unless Three have disabled the second sim with software, I don't see xiaomi making a separate device just for Three.

I'd imagine they will once a global rom is available and tested locally.

If I could get a Mix 3 here with both sims unlocked for in and around the same price as online then I'd seriously consider one. Love my S9+ but dual sim would be very useful as I've a work phone I carry around too.

You could always sell the S9+ and buy another S9+ dual SIM from Amazon, especially if you like to keep to the Samsung. The price has dropped considerably recently.

I have the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, great device apart from MIUI.

1st, it's filled with Xiaomi apps with no way to uninstall without root.

2nd, Sync can't be enabled for a single app, all apps must sync or none at all. Eg, I wanted to have Gmail sync automatically but there's only an option to sync everything, including Xioami apps which I wouldn't trust just yet.

3rd, updates can occur without your knowledge and sometimes wipe important data. The option is there to disable this feature but it's well hidden and if auto updates are disabled you will have an update notification icon permanently in the notification area.

4th, camera, it's not great on my model and also on many Xiaomi devices, so check reviews before purchase.

On the good side it is a tank of a device, it's been dropped, kicked and got wet plenty of times.
I once had it in my pocket when my wife was sitting in my lap (crowded bus), and when I took it out it was bent in a banana like shape. I popped off the back cover and straightened it out and apart from 1 dead pixel it's perfect.
Battery life is insane, 2 days with good use. It's fast, I mean very fast. Apps open instantly and scrolling websites is smooth as butter.

I upgraded from a Vodafone smart ultra 6 to this device and apart from camera quality it's a better device in every other way.
