To 2080 or to 1080ti

So I've just sold my 1080 which I've been gaming with happily at 1440p for over a year now but managed to sell if for €50 less than it cost me.

So now the question is to buy a 2080 or a 1080ti?

I'll be buying in the states and getting it brought home Mrs is a regular over and back. So I've been looking at this https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16814125954

All opinions welcome the card will be paired with a 7700k running at 4.8 and 27 inch G-sync 144hz monitor

A quick overview of both cards, assuming both are overclocked to 2Ghz:

RTX 2080 = 2944 Cuda Cores at 2GHz, corresponds to a computing power of 11,776 Tflops

GTX 1080 Ti = 3584 Cuda Cores at 2Ghz, corresponds to a computing power of 14,336 Tflops

In real gaming scenarios, there is not much between both cards, newer titles seem to run slightly better on the 2080.

I'm not sure about the future of DLSS and Raytracing technologies, they may be more relevant in the next gen of cards from Nvidia, but I'm pretty sure future driver updates from Nvidia will favour the 2080. Your link to the 2080 price is not working on newegg, but if both cards are in a similar price range I would get the 2080.

If price is a major consideration you could also look at the better 2070 cards.

I am considering whether to get a 2070 or a 1080ti and it will all come down to what the best deals are for Black Friday.

Reviews seem to point that the $600-$650 2070 cards benchmark better than a 1080ti but I am no expert in determining the finer points of such a comparison.

I havent seen anything to suggest 2070 performance better than 1080ti, 15% in favour of the 1080ti from any benchmarks ive seen.


As for 2080 V 1080ti the 2080 has a slight edge but only a few frames here and there nothing you will notice ingame.
It comes down to your budget really but one thing that rang in my ears when i was buying recently was Steve from Gamers Nexus saying "do not buy on a promise" in some of his vids about the rtx cards recently.

Personally i went for the 1080ti as for me it just felt the right purchase and i couldnt be happier, if RTX really takes off in games and performance is there i might be tempted this time next year maybe but for now ive no interest.
If however your a real enthusiast and the cost is not an issue why not go for a 2080ti?

Don't know where the poster got that a 2070 fares better than a 1080Ti.

The poster I think is mixing up the 1080 and 1080Ti. 2070 is not even close to beating a 1080ti.

Obviously if they're the same price, it would be a bit silly not to get a 2080, as putting aside all the potential failures to deliver on the RTX features, it's still as fast/faster than the 1080ti in raw speed in current games.

But the thing is, that you can get 1080Ti's new now for £580-£600, the cheapest 2080 is about £100 more. So up to the buyer if that gap is worth it.

I had been looking at this vid comparing an overclocked 2070 to a stock 1080ti which shows less than 5% difference for Battlefield 1 with 1440p which is what I was interested in. My bad to say that it benchmarked better than the 1080ti clearly not, but not much of a performance difference vs. the $150 price difference.

All I have seen so far is talk of deals on the likes of 1060 cards for Black Friday but I hold out hope of getting a good deal on a 1080ti

You're not comparing like with like, at all.

That video is the heavily OC'd MSI 2070 Gaming Z - which pretty much costs the same or more as the cheaper 1080Tis....and it's still slower than a stock 1080Ti.

You can get a 1080Ti for cheaper from OCUK than that card right now, and it's indisputably faster, at stock speeds, let alone applying an OC to it.

But the OP is buying in the US, that card is $600 on Newegg so a significant $160 cheaper than the cheapest 1080ti.
Anyway sorry OP don't wish to derail your thread further, was just trying to suggest an alternative if budget was a key issue.

Fair enough, I didn't realise that he was buying in the US. I don't know why the 1080Ti is holding in price in the US but falling heavily everywhere else.

To the OP - that 1080Ti is overpriced compared to buying in the EU, where you can get a 1080Ti for €680 new at the moment. I wouldn't bother paying that price in the US, you're not saving anything really. (and will you have to pay state tax on top of that?)

Some cards have international warranty and RMA is through the company but some will ask you to RMA via the retailer, so this is something you also really have to keep in mind. Personally at those prices I wouldn't bother with the 2080 or 1080ti from the US, makes little sense as the 1080Ti is the same price here more or less, and the 2080's not far off either, and you're no concerns or hassles with warranty.

There is only $30 between the 1080ti and the 2080 on new egg in the states. I don't mind picking up a card in Europe but 2080 in the states works out about €695. Basically would I be mad to go with a 1080ti over a 2080 for only a few euro

As for taking the jump to the 2080ti I couldn't justify the cost of that with what I made back on my 1080 the move to a 1080ti or 2080 will only be costing me roughly €250 to €270

1080Ti's are nearly all gone now so it will be second hand or a Turing card soon enough.

If there is little between them in cost, then it's a no-brainer for me - 2080 all the way. You will likely see more performance from future driver updates, 10 series is now end of life. Also, resale value down the road will likely be better with 2080.

Cuda core count mean nothing.

The 2080 is a better card hands down outside of having a lower memory count. It is faster memory on the 2080 though. You are basically getting the same, in some cases better performance with the 2080, before even using the DLSS or RT cores.

It's a no brainer when there's only €20 between them. Get the 2080.

I'm going to pull the trigger on the 2080 from the states tomorrow, for the small price difference between the 2080 and even the 1080ti in Europe I'd rather go with the new tech in the hope drivers widen the gap from where they sit now. Also on an taste note the the white 2080 will suit my build better than the 1080ti's I've seen. I'll post when it arrives and stick up a pick of it fitted.

I just ordered my 2080 from amazon.de for €780 delivered, cheapest I could find. Still have a 1080ti, but that will go into my living room setup. It appears the 2080 lags behind the 1080ti in VR, hopefully driver updates might fix that.

Got the card last week but only fitted it yesterday, great looked card and looks perfect in my build, very happy with the performance so far and thermals have been great so far. 2080 was the right purchase for me considering the price of a new 1080ti and what I paid for the 2080. I was considering a second hand 1080ti but cheapest offer I had accepted was 600 so buying new with a four year warranty on my Rtx2080 seemed the better option for me. I'll throw up a pic or two later today.
