A mate of mine works with addicts in drogheda.
They were complaining about the interest rate on their accounts from the dealers.
Apparently the Dundalk dealers have 0% finance which their is a bit of envy about!
Also the Dundalk dealers do buy one get one free on Sundays! A nice touch,which is unheard of in drogheda.
I know there is a lot of bitching about Drogheda v Dundalk , but I think it's fair to say Dundalk have nicer heroin dealers!!

A taximan has been shot twice in the back while in his car on the Bridge of Peace in Drogheda at 6:20pm. Garda are at the scene. Initial reports are the injuries are not fatal.

That's what I heard, that the target was a passenger in the taxi and the taxi man was caught in the crossfire. But that's very different from the rumours posted above, so who knows where the actual truth lies.

Apparently they sent a video of the dead kid to the other gang and that prompted the gun attack.

Portugal's decriminalisation is hugely different to legalisation. Dealing and possession for sale/supply is still illegal in portugal. It hasn't stopped the revenue flowing it's just stopped criminalising addicts.

I'd be in favour of decriminalisation of simple possession for personal use but legalisation is too far. You're essentially making legit business men out of drug traffickers as the drugs will still be produced by murderous cartels in far off countries that have the climate. People point to cannabis legalisation in the US when making an argument for legalisation of cocaine and heroin. Different beasts entirely.

Wouldn't it be better if the chattering classes simply stopped taking cocaine etc?Stop f**king up their own and other peoples lives. The gangs only thrive when there are ready buyers.

It's sad that someone as young as 17 had to go thru this. I feel for his family, but even more for other children who may know him from school / other social activities and knew nothing of gang related stuff.

That story is like something you'd hear happening involing the cartels in Mexico.

That child was badly let down by the adults around him, he never stood a chance.
That's the danger with these gangs, when they are groomed into joining it all looks so cool & fun playing the hardman and by the time they're in too deep and want out, they can't get out.
I know the child in this case was from a criminal family & was possibly more than willing to play his part, but what hope did he have of having any other kind of life?

Regardless of what he did or didn't do, he was a child.
A child at a clear disadvantage in terms of life experience, maturity and the concept of consequences when trying to navigate that kind of dangerous situation. The adults who committed those violent acts against him had the upper hand in every sense of the word, he was vulnerable and an easier target than older, more senior members of the gang.

That's what makes this so horrific. Children should never be so deep into that kind of world that they're at risk of being brutally murdered and dismembered by other adults.

Of course. But it's never happened anywhere.

I'm sure people thought the same doing Prohibition. It's never gonna happen in our lifetime. Let's do something practical rather than thinking that more guards on the street or another anti drug ad campaign are going to do anything. The gangs are clearly acting with impunity

Unfortunately that would involve a Government with a backbone to stand up to the 'Joe Duffy crowd' of auld biddys.

Remember when the smart-shops were closed down by emergency legislation?

The Government are quick enough to move if they think they'll lose a few votes, but if it's 17-year old tracker-knackers getting chopped up, I wouldn't be holding my breath.

I don't have that much sympathy with the victim on account of his age. He got himself mixed up in a fairly grown-up level of trouble and paid the price.

That said, I do hope the adults that brought him up wrong realise what their failings led to.

The only positive thing to come from all of this is pressure on politicians and Gardai to deal with this situation instead of just condemning it.
