Will the 7700 work on Z390? I thought it was 8th and 9th gen. It's not a great MB eitherway but that said it's probably okay for a quadcore.

I thought socket 1151 CPU would sit into a matching board?

    Now I see.. it's for 8th/9th Gen i7s...

Yeah... Intel made things slightly awkward recently due to increasing power requirements while they compete with AMD. A lot of the motherboards *could* be inter-operable, but aren't.
Is there any real world benefit to using Intel for VM builds? If not, i'd say look at the new Ryzen CPUs like the 2700X or 2700 paired with a B450 or X470 motherboard. Might save you a few quid.

That's an old i7, what you want now is an i7-8700 or 9th series (pricier).

Tremendous! Thanks for the input folks!

It’s been an age since I’ve had an AMD in a machine, I’m not adverse to the idea at all.

@KOKiki, really appriciate the effort there!

AMD are good these days, and much better value than Intel to boot :)

Ive been reading up all evening, certainly seem to have caught up, last time I built a machine the Q6600 was the bizzo and to be fair that box is still up and running in my folks! :)

If youre going heavy on VMs, maybe go with a Ryzen 1700 over the 2600 for the extra core/thread count. Its about 20% faster in multicore tasks, but 10% slower in single/quad core.

Theyre around the same price too, so it really depends what your main use will be that'll you get better bang for buck for.

100% study box, no games, nothing. It’s gonna host a number of VMs for learning. Ideally I’d like to have 2 or 3 VMs running at once.

In that case, crank the CPU up to the 2700X and the GPU down to a GT 1030 or something (you need a graphics card as there is no onboard GPU on the Zen series unless it has a 'G' moniker.)

Just make sure it's not the GT 1030 with DDR4 as it's an utter turd.
