That crackle they make when they come on for the first time in years is scary and so satisifying !
I have a backlog of spare monitors that I want to fix.

Its the little hissing sound you hear and can't quiet figure it out, shortly before a large cap explodes cus you fitted it backwards, is what scares me :D

You should try discharging a CRT in nothing but a nightgown with a fag hanging out of your mouth, really puts it all in perspective. :pac:

Finally achieved something this evening that I've been wracking my head over for ages, can't believe the answer was under my nose the whole time!

Streaming 4:3 content in it's correct full screen aspect ratio to a CRT - mainly for Netflix.

Wii no longer supports Netflix unfortunately.
WiiU does analogue out and you can get it going, but is locked to 16:9 so useless.

Got a 360 scart cable in the post today and hooked it all up. Took me an age to get it going, console had to do a million updates to get on to Live and then had issues with two step authentication. Even had to climb up into the attic to find my controller and when I did the battery compartment was missing, so I had to wedge in two AA batteries with some copper coins.

Got there in the end though and my god is it glorious! :D

Pictures don't do it justice, but trust me, it's worth doing! There's loads of 4:3 content on Netflix and the RGB signal is razor sharp. Animation looks amazing.

Can actually make out what's going on in DS9 again! :D

Currently on a bit of a hunt for a CRT... will probably sound mental but...!

I grew up with a 1986 Mitsubishi 20 inch TV and VCR in the living room. It had a smoked glass bezel over the screen and looked really nice.

I've worked out what the VCR was (a Mitsubishi HS-339UR) but can't figure out the TV at all!

Had a bit of luck when I realised recently that Mitsubishi and NEC are the same company when it comes to displays, so found a few CRTs under the NEC brand that look very similar to it.

Case and bezel look the same here (case was grey on my one though) but the buttons are completely different.

Did find one Mitsubishi that looks kind of similar, looks like a smaller, cheaper model (looks like the model number is 1416PS?)

If any of you happen to see something that looks similar to this, either in person or online, give me a shout!

Would it not be an issue for reflections?

You'd see reflections on it when it's off alright, but as soon as the picture is on you don't see any at all.

There's actually a smoked tint to the bezel (similar to what you see on arcade machines) so you don't actually see any of the monitor surround, just the picture in smoked glass when it's on.

Ive done similar with a ps3 and my little pvm. Also started watching dvds on it recently. Its just mad to see the netflix logo and menu show up on a crt.
I predict the next big thing will be dvds again. No joke. Watching them was a totally different experience from browsing Netflix. Id say a retro dvd rental shop would do well if it sold fresh popcorn and nachos. I think people are really starting to miss that experience.

I checked the odds of that on Paddy Powers...not looking good. The mainstream has embraced digital distribution, & that's here to stay like it or loathe it.

If hipsters are currently buying VHS it's only a matter of time before they hit DVDs too! :D

Haha. I mean the next big retro thing. Id say if you opened a dvd store and also sold dvd players for 20 quid people would use it.
Many many people dont do illegal streaming and the selection on the subscription services are always lacking. Anytime i think of something i want to watch its never on netflix or prime. I have to either suffer the buffering and missing subtitles of the dodgy streaming platforms of go get my pc riddled with spyware trying to download off the bay or something lome that. I used to have a massive collection but got rid to save space with the digital age.

Anyway me and my missus would definitely use it once they sold fresh popcorn soft drinks and proper nachos like the odeon does.

Just had a look at that laserdisc set there, wow absolutely gorgeous - unopened too!

Will you be peeling off that polyethylene and having a good sniff or keeping it sealed?

CeX aren't far off that though. You can go in & browse their dvd selection for prices like €1, 0.50c, and less. If you can buy them for that price, who's gonna pay more just to rent them, and have to go all the way back with them?

You're right in that the legit streaming options can be lacking, and the market is very fragmented now with netflix, amazon, disney, etc...so the cost of having them all is quite expensive. I don't think standard definition dvd's though are the saviour, any more than vhs tapes are...they have a place, but I can't see a sustainable business model based on them. I'd imagine they'll remain mana for hobbyists and collectors is all.

Id nearly give the dvds for free. You would make the money of the popcorn and the nachos.

Got this today. Its mint condition, but was definitely opened in the past as the original receipt from 1994 was inside the box. Still very happy with it though.
