Particularly coming so soon after the killing of Lyra McKee by dissident Republicans in Derry.

Mary Lou and her “up the rebels” party speech last year.

    Morons.

Saoirse McHugh just on Newstalk already boxing off options and painting herself into a corner of irrelevancy .

Things are moving very fast for her the last couple of weeks. She shouldn't have had said that about a potential coalition government, even if she believes it. There's potentially a place for a firebrand independent MEP who offers an uncompromising voice on Green issues during the coming decade, where Green issues are likely to dominate political agendas at all levels. So I wouldn't be using "irrelevant" just yet.

She's going to have to learn on the job though in terms of playing the game.

I for one am shocked that the electorate did not want to hear more of Rita Harrold's "Socialist Feminist voice"

Very naive. I would have thought the best chance to actually bring about green policies (that's what politics is about, right?) Would be to acknowledge that a good place for the greens would be as a mitigating force in coalition with FF or FG

Utopian vision of a green majority may sound nice to her, but Cuffe is far more realistic. I heard him say if the other parties adopt green policies that would be as got as political office for him which I thought was a selfless thing to say.

The minority party is never a particularly mitigating force on the big party. See last time out (even if they did get some good stuff through they are pummeled on the big stuff they we're never going to stop.

Richard Boyd Barrett is the last person you'd think would be on the left.

I am so glad the people of cabra glasnevin had no interest in her claptrap. ‘Ist’ pigeonhole politics worked in 2011 when the country was in the toilet , but now labeling yourself in a generic left agenda doesn't get you automatic support.

She would have made a good media friendly resource on green issues and helped a FF/FG green coalition but she just wanted a left agenda but not to jump in the deep letter party end, she’ll jump to the social democrats if a coalition in a GE was ever on the table

I have a big issue with anybody changing party during their term. You got voted in as a representative whether that be a party or as an independent. If you decide to change your political alignment I think you should have to resign and a by-election should happen.

Does anyone know what the position is with By Elections. Am I right in thinking that Barry Andrews and Clare Daly's (if successful) Dáil seats will be up for grabs. When will the by elections be held and would they all be on the same day?

What if you feel your party has changed political alignment? I mean I agree with you to an extent but changing parties does not always mean changing what you campaigned on if the party changed tactics.

Some have suggested that sinn Fein go more anti immigrant. Should that cause by-elections? Should someone leaving the party over it (as they may have campaigned on a pro immigration ticket while in sinn Fein before) cause a vote?

It has to be held within six months but if Clare daly is the last seat in Dublin then that might complicate things given that seat will be held up until(possibly even if)the UK leave the EU.

Cheers, nothing certain for whoever gets that seat so.

Reading through some stuff on Twitter from commentators at the count for Midlands north west it seems McHugh from the greens is far from certain of a seat and will be battling with Carty for last seat and some saying she in fact won't get elected .

couple of results seem to have been leaked according to Europe elects also turnout in Italy seems up in the north and down in the south which would be good for the lega nord and bad for the five star movement.

    Barry Andrews hasn't been a TD since 2011! ;)

Need a completed first count to see what's happening. Wild rumours for now off the back of an exit poll. 4-5 for three seats is about all you can say.

Yeah need to see actual count. Interesting Matt Carty said he expects to get 2% less than exit poll prediction

Damn you Wikipedia, googled his name and Barry Andrews TD was the first thing I spotted.
I'm off to sit in the Dunce's corner for the afternoon :o:o:o

This no results until 10pm is leading to wild rumours. And given the size of the constituencies a tally from one area should have huge health warnings with them.

I think early tomorrow for MNW is being talked about but otherwise I agree.

Never mind 10 pm, it appears that we won't have results until tomorrow - and maybe later in the case of Ireland South.

Where are those e-voting machines when we need them!

Are those e voting machines still collecting dust ? I think a happy medium could be found between keeping the paper voting system we have now but making the counting far more efficient.

Heard both the chief counting officer in Cork and Paschal "Drama Queen" Sheehy making a big song and dance about the problems presented by the " 2 Foot plus long ballot paper" and it might be mid week before we have full results for Ireland South, what a bloody joke in this day and age, I know people have issues with e voting but there's also resistance out there from those who get a hard on at the prospect of a count stretched over several days.

Scrapped and as many of the FF mates storage contracts were killed early as possible

That could go on forever! At least the other two should produce one fairly quickly and then knock out a big chunk of votes!
