question - are storms classified on the beaufort scale according to normal speed or gust speed?

Not surpirising really given it's built on a bloody hill. Also it's fairly soft outside in cork now. Wind and rain belting off the windows.

PAP buoy at 16.5 W showing a marked increase in wind speed to 38 knots (south) and a pressure fall to 980 mb.

Centre last fix at 2330z near 47.5 N 22 W although looks like triple vortex chain from there to 48N 20.5 W. The cloud signature associated with the strong wind from ship report at 18z is near the PAP buoy's location. Will be interesting to see if winds there continue to increase or check now.

If this is going to fool the experts and hit a higher level, there won't be much time for an effective warning so I am hoping the orange alert is a good choice (still think it is but would be planning on red near Cobh). We should add a high risk of coastal overtopping floods with storm surge interacting with river runoff from earlier and possibly renewed downpours. (moderate rather than severe probably).

This image will update, later readers can see for themselves how far Diana has moved from the 2330z satellite image.

PAP buoy down to 970 mb at 0300h, winds have been around 40 knots past two hours.

Seems on track for the forecast issued, quite a dry radar at present. 14 C at Valentia with gusts to 40 kts.

Early model runs look similar to previous.

Was quite blustery with light rain 30 mins ago near Douglas. Stiff breeze & no rain at the moment in cork city centre. Recycling bin collection today - none were blown over.

The rising wind was my alarm clock soon after 5 am. Now a constant. Glad of a quieter night and ready for the fray.

06Z analysis has the centre now more of a single entity and a little further north than yesterday's 24-hr forecast had it for the same time. The wind gradient around the trailing front is as steep, if not slightly steeper, this morning. The AMSR2 wind scan will be available in a few minutes so we will get a good handle on the actual wind-field.

Wind has really picked up here just north of cork city in the past 10mins. Mostly strong gusts than anything too sustained.
