Hi all, my friends younger brother is looking to get a gaming PC as a Christmas present.They have about €700 to spend, but under budget would be appreciated. I can build it OK, and no windows is needed.

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming and using the unreal engine

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? No, going to buy a used one

Here's a 1080p rig that comes in under budget. Prices are fluctuating alot so you might need to swap components to get the best price, but this will give you an idea of what to aim for.

Simular build to above but shaved a few pennies from the PSU and put in a RX 580 OC for a decent GPU bump, slightly different b450 mobo, but they're much of a muchness. Also changed out the Kingston SSD as I just think they're a bad product so a few quid more for a curcial alternative is a good investment in my book.

If you could get old of a 1st generation Ryzen I'd recommend getting an X370 ( like this one) over the b450 board as it has better VRM and more OC support, will also be a better platform for future upgrades to say the Ryzen 3000 series chips. But you'd need to borrow a 1st gen ryzen to install a new BIOS for it to work with a 2600 and that's probably more effort than is reasonable if you don't already have a 1st gen ryzen card laying around.
You could also always get a 1700 and an x370 for cheaper than a 2600 and b450 and getter better alround performance.

This would be a possibly build with an x370 and a 1700 combination. It's what I'd go for myself as an alrounder (I'd definitely be OC'ing it too).
If you're not willing to OC, the 2600 might actually run *most* games better due to higher base clock speeds. But with the 1700 on stock cooler you can OC to 3.9ghz.

I'd say a 2600X + basic mobo is much better than that. You're not going to be doing much OC'ing on that board really (plus the OP said not wanting to overclock) and at stock speed the 2600X is way ahead for gaming. Having said that for 60hz gaming there's zero difference really, but all in all. 2600x + any sort of AMD mobo at all is ideal sweet spot.

the 2600x is £35 more expensive than the 1700 and 45 more expensive than the 2600 and the cheapest b450 is another tenner more than the x370 listed in my alternative build.

If you're not goin to OC the 2600 is the best value for money, if you are, I'd still take the x370 + 1700 over a b450 and 2600x because it's a better upgrad platform for next year or the year after and even on the stock cooler you can OC the 1700 to 3.9ghz.

If you're going down the 2600x road you'd be better off getting the 2600 and an x470 board as it would be the same price as an 2600x and a b450, and once OC'd the difference between the chips is negliable, and you have a much better mobo.

I think I'll go with this build per your recommendation as the CPU won't be overclocked.

That's all fine but the OP stated they wouldn't be overclocking so it's well worth stretching for the 2600X + whatever the cheapest mobo is.

1700 at stock lags way behind the 2600/2600x in games. Obviously that X370 board is good value and cheap but I also doubt you'd be doing major overclocking on it as it's very basic and no heatsinks on vrm or anything.

I really don't see the value in the 2600x over the 2600 for the €50 difference, especially if you're not over clocking as there's only a 7% performance difference between them.
