i have a corrupt sd card , its not recognised if i plug it into my pc using a sdcard reader .
If I put it into my phone it says sd card damaged .
I have the option to format sd card from my phone.
i,m ready to format it .
i want to format it to fat 32 disk format .
So i can recover the mp3 files , podcasts on it.
i have nothing important on it,
just youtube videos, music and podcasts .
If i format it from my android phone what will be the disk format ,
will it be fat 32 or some other format?

Would it not be less hassle to simply buy a new card and download everything again?

Formatting a card will wipe all data from the card to facilitate writing of new data to the card.

Try this OP SD Card Formatter

I don,t know what files are on the card ,
so i cant just download everything again.
i intend to use recuva to recover the files from the card ,
also it would take a long time to download 200 podcasts .
i can use recuva but the sd card must be formatted first to acess the files .I have used it before to recover mp3 files .
if i format it in ntfs file format it will erase all the files on the card .
    the card is sdmicro 32gig

I installed sdformatter it does not detect the sd card .
i Think i,ll have to use my phone to format the card .

Card is likely in raw format now in my experience of this happening on various android phones.

I've been able to recover cards like this by using a live cd/usb of Ubuntu or similar to get at the files I wanted back.

I've also had issues in the past reformatting the card once files are recovered. Windows will see it no problem but the phone refused to. I got around this by unchecking the quick format box when formatting.

Have you attempted recovery of the files before you interfere with the formatting?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,184 ✭✭✭riclad

    i have attempted nothing,
i just put the card in my phone.
    It says sdcard damaged .
i understand i can use linux mint live cd etc to recover files ,
i,d prefer to just format the card from my phone.
If i can set it to format in fat32 disk mode.
i have recovered files many times before using Recuva ,but it requires the drive to be formatted before it scans the card.
I have the card in my pc inside a sdcard reader.
In control panel ,disk management it says removeable drive E: no media .

If you don’t even know what’s on it, what’s the point of recovering it?

    :D

    Yes i know whats on it, 150plus podcasts,music , youtube videos .
    giant bombcast, vergecast etc
I formatted 2 cards before and recuva was able to recover 90 per cent of the mp3 files on the card,s .
It shows a green icon, green = easily recoverable file .Red icon = file damaged ,little chance of being recovered.

Photorec will recover files regardless the state of the filesystem.

Photorec can only see drive c.
I think i,ll have to format the card in my phone ,
in order for the card to be detected by my pc.
i,d like to know what is the default disk format in android before i do this ,
    is it fat 32 ?

    https://www.maketecheasier.com/format-sd-card-android/

This link says the default in android is, if card is formatting in my phone the disk format is fat 32 .
So i,ll format it and see if the card can be used again for storage .
My android phone sony experia L1 has no option i can find to format sdcards .
I formatted a 1 gig card in my old phone a few minutes ago.
    it is disk format fat32.
i just checked the card by using a sdcard reader in my pc.

I Put the card in my old phone, it says sd card unmounted ,
the tab to mount card is greyed out .
The format card command is greyed out .g
I might have to make a mint linux live cd and try and acess the card from there .
My Sony phone has no format sdcard tab,
it just shows the storage amount .
It does not detect the damaged card .
maybe theres an adroid app i can use to format the card .

Have you tried the app I linked you to above?

I tried the app you linked to.
i cant get the sd card to be detected by my pc ,i bought a new
    sdcard reader .
i had it in my phone last week ,phone said ,do you wish to format card ,i said no.
i just bought a new sd card .
I,m giving up on this .
SD card is not detected by my phone ,
the sony or the old one .
i,ll just download the podcasts again .
theres no valuable data on the phone, just music, podcast,s ,youtube videos.
My new sd card reader does, not detect the card .

Are you sure it is the reader that is not seeing the card?
I would expect it is up to the OS it is plugged into that would have that function.

You might well get a different response if you plug it in when running Linux and try
    testdisk
    or
    photorec

to see if the files can be recovered.
The filesystem would not be needed as the files could be read directly from the card.

There might also be an option to rebuild the structure of the partition table.

it,s not detected by my 2 android phones ,
    i tried 2 card readers ,
    i bought a new card .
i have no wish to spend more time on testing the card.
i should have formatted when i had the chance .
    i tried it on 3 different pc,s .
All my other cards work fine in the phones and my pc.

Ii discovered my old phone won,t read any sd cards , sdcard slot is broken.
i downloaded free easus data recovery app,
It gave me a full list of all the files on the drive,
filename, file size.Audio and video ,mp4, mp3, mkv.
    eg rebel fm episode 178, 89megabyte,s .
so i ,m just gonna recover the mp3 file,s the ones over 40megabyte.
    I used photorec to recover 28 mp3 files .
I had to download an app to format the drive in fat32 file format.
i can use free version mini tool to recover all the files , i want .
i,m just gonna ignore the rest of video files .
Theres 25gig worth of files on the card.
many of the mp3 files are 5-12megabyte in size .
recuva cant recover any video files.
i recovered the video files the ones over 60 megabyte,s
    .
The disk has no name , its just blank card formatted in fat32 disk format.
Testdisk just checks the drive ,
it says intel drive ,fat32 ,
it does not recover any data .
i don,t know why it cant see any files on the card.
Photorec can only see about 27 mp3 files , no video files .
