Little Island mail centre looks like it’s to close in the new year.staff can’t get a date whether it’s earlier or later in the year.

Looks like the union sold them out, the other centers at risk ; staff were told to lobby their local TDS, in cork they were told explicitly not too. The whole thing stinks

How would the union selling them out benefit the union?

Why would they do such a thing, if they could?

    Makes the most sense really.

Portloaise services international parcels and customs. Dublin is needed for Dublin and Athlone presumably serves the west and north west of Ireland. Cork an Limerick are now within a short distance of Portlaoise for logistic purposes, and closing either of the midlands offices would have a far more devastating effect than closing one in one of Cork’s industrial hubs in full employment.

Flagged a long time ago and no decision on which mails centre is to close. It has always been between Athlone & Cork. In one way Cork is the obvious one as Portlaoise can Service Cork / Kerry / Waterford DSU's quite easily with the better road network that is in place. Whilst another argument says Athlone is the obvious one because its close to Portlaoise.

All agreed with union and staff a good while ago as part of the modernisation of an post that has ensured it has cemented its position as the primary parcel delivery service.

But always beware of what local politicians say - they are interested on two things only - re-election and self publicity. Westmeath politicians had an almost identical press release about the athlone centre.

Its set for 3rd qtr of 2019 and that has always been the date and staff in both centres have knows since mid 2017 and they were told there would be a minimum 6 months notice and generous redundancy

They now deliver nationwide, so I'd be very skeptical about reports that Ikea are going to open anywhere else.

We got a couple grand worth of furniture delivered directly for €74, smaller orders since then were only €10 to get delivered directly.

Makes a nice rumour everytime it pops up though.
