So, in a briefing room meeting, porn-moustache John Bolton, one of the best people, had '5000 troops to Colombia' on a visible notepad. Venezuela was discussed in the meeting. Brilliant.

It a pretty common thing to do deliberately these days. I'd be surprised if this was an accident.

Having said all of that, I have now seen the footage and the guy was sweating profusely and stumbling through. Either he realised that he shouldn't be talking about the report or he knew he was lying and may get into trouble for it.

He wasn't made acting AG on account of him being the best acting AG the President of the USA could come up with. He was hired because he was dumb enough to hitch his wagon to Trump. He's not being truthful here.

Feb 8th will be when he is before Congress. If he thinks he was sweating yesterday...

It's what happens when a person of limited intelligence, with a thirst for notoriety disguised as fame and driven by misplaced loyalty, gets in way over their head. I'm confident that the very first question he will be asked is "Where did you get this information from?". There are two possible answers. An informant. Or he lied as acting AG.

The Mueller report won't arrive before Kushner or Trump Jr are arrested.

To put it another way: if it does arrive before they are then Trump will be contesting the 2020 election. In that scenario the report is almost not worth reading, unfortunately.

Didn't Mueller apply for a 6 month extension to the Grand Jury (or something) just before Christmas?

Why would they do that if they were wrapping up in February?

I think it indicated that they would need a maximum of 6 months, as opposed to a minimum

There's the mystery state owned company too

US or Russian [or Ukrainian - as it's the other state involved in the collusion allegations]?

That's going to be one hell of a week, considering it's likely Cohen will be testifying before the House Oversight Committee on Feb 7th, the House Intelligence Committee on the 8th, and the Senate Intelligence Committee on the 12th.

It's a wholly state owned company. It could be Russian but it could also be Qatari or from another middle-eastern country. I don't have enough information to offer you anything more than speculation, I'm afraid.

Looking at that photo, it seems anything but accidental. Plus note how there’s basically nothing else written on that huge notepad. He’s very obviously sending a message to someone.

Yeah. Whatever one might think about Bolton, he is not the careless type to do this in error.

Mmm...Krugman points out the economy won't help Trump, because it's not getting better - it was pretty good to start with, and won't experience a big growth, like it did when Reagan was President. Reagan presided over an uptick in the business cycle that had been down due to OPEC and the 'double-dip' recession of the late 1970's/early 1980's. This isn't where Trump is. Coupled with Trump's huge unpopularity, it's scary to contemplate what he might get up to as the election nears.

"Combine this lack of a strong economic upside over the next two years with Trump’s extreme current unpopularity, and his chances for re-election — if he even makes it to the end of his first term — don’t look too good. Which raises the question of what he and his party will do if defeat is staring them in the face."

His polling has been taking a dive since the shutdown began. Of course, that hasn't stopped him from hinting at another one.

His only way out of this is to declare the emergency and then have it shot down by the courts.

But , the risk there is that it's not the courts that shoot him down , but congress.

Apparently a declaration of emergency by POTUS can be overturned by a simple majority in both houses.

So , the House will definitely vote against it.. but if he goes for it and then the Senate vote him down , would only take 3 or 4 to cross the aisle , he is absolutely toast.

At least if it's the courts he can blame the "weak judiciary" etc. etc.

And it is why the Dems cannot give him anything for the wall.

Even a slight give in will be represented by Trump as a major win for him, cue pictures of him standing at the wall etc.

He has backed himself into a corner and if the Dems hold their nerve he will be forced to go with a national emergency. This would immediately raise the question as to why Russia trying to interfere with elections is not treated as an emergency. Why Puerto Rico was not treated as such. Why the opioid crisis was called as such but nothing done about it.

It creates more problems that it solves for Trump, although it will play out great with his base. But his base is nowhere near enough to win an election.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but YouGov has seen his approval rating tick back up by 3% to 42% since the shutdown ended.

That is not bad news, although seems very premature to me.

But what it does show is that Trump cannot go back into a shutdown. So he is left with two options. Call a national emergency, with the issues that brings, or capitulate for the second time in a month.

IMO, he will go with the emergency as at the least it allows him to seem in charge for a bit longer.

He clearly doesn't give a shvite -autocomplete (spell check?) would surely fix his spelling mistakes quite easily.

Maybe he has been advised that it gives him a common touch (and invites extra interest)

He's really not that clever. I think its a mix of arrogance and stupidity. He doesnt know he makes mistakes, and people are picking on him if they point them out. FAKE SPELLING!

This whole thing would be funny if it wasnt so dangerous. I hope we make it to the movie version of events.

Dunning Kruger effect. It's amazing how often he misspeaks in speeches and told with it as if the made up sound is what he meant to say.

    Er, yes, that's probably true.

The more I look at that Whitaker performance, the more I think Trump told him to say the report would issue soon, in order to put pressure on the SC to wrap it up.

The latest ghoul to try and make some money out of his time in the WH (Simms) said to Cooper last night that Spicer was told by Trump to go out and tell the world that the people who mattered knew what covfefe meant, and that Spicer dutifully did so.

It strikes me that something similar happened here. Trump told him to march out there and shoe-horn that statement it in to the end of the briefing. Whitaker fluffed his lines because he knew it was BS but had no option but to comply.

It does not look good for him when/if he appears before the House.
