The Americans are infatuated with their military. They constantly describe their soldiers as hero's regardless and arrogantly go on about themselves as the leaders of the "free World" etc. Their military devours an enormous amount of their economic resources and lets face it their record of nasty deeds all around the world is a very long one sadly but thats a reality most Americans either ignore refuse to accept or are ignorant of and which of course would not fit in with their glorification of the military.
It doesn't pay to demonize Americans for all you may be right.

The US is burdened by its position in the world and is constrained to act as it does.

Any other country in its position would face the same choices -and venerate its armed forces too..

We in Europe have benefited enormously from their engagement in WW2 (and after) even as we may suspect they may as easily looked the other way.

Show me any imperial power with clean hands over our shared history.

Trump's election is the last thing that should have happened to the US but America's place in the world is certainly a reasonable subject for debate and to the extent that the US public actually felt that it was being taken for granted by its allies (I am not sure if it was) then that had to be addressed.

I wouldn't be the greatest fan of Pelosi, but by God has she got the measure of Donald Trump.

She's playing him like a fiddle.

There's no point talking around it anymore. He only responds to insults. Perceived or otherwise.

Better to fight fire with fire and watch him unravel.

Even Mayor Pete was at him today.

No doubt the financial disclosures that are starting, are getting to him.

Is that another $16B on top of the $12B they already annouced or just an extension from 12 to 16?

    Either way it's just madness..

China was a market for one third of US soya. I think the price has halved.
    12 + 16= 28bn dollars, two tranches.

I follow Trump on Twitter (just for the giggles) and you can spot the tweets he has got someone else to write for him.

The guy is unstable. I spotted another tweet from somebody that was sitting in on the Deutsche Bank proceedings.

Jared and Don Snr were allegedly laundering millions for Russians through the Trump group. Thats why the bank staff flagged it.

So you're pointing out that twitter is being consistent on fake news? Good to know. Doesn't really change any of the factual stuff that we have on Trump at this stage.

The only thing the United States is "burdened by" is its untenable position domestically and financially if it cut back its military spending. There would be tens of thousands of unemployed former soldiers.

Trump Calls Himself ‘Extremely Stable Genius,’ Demands Staffers Tell Press How ‘Calm’ He Is

He rolled out the "extremely stable genius" line again , despite being mocked and pilloried mercilessly about it the last time he used it.
Today in normal, unalarming speeches from heads of state, President Trump spoke in the Roosevelt Room with the intention of announcing $16 billion in federal aid to farmers suffering from Trump’s most recent self-made crisis: the U.S.-China trade war. The itinerary was soon thrown out: The president, frustrated by reports of how he stormed out of a Wednesday meeting with Nancy Pelosi, told the press that she had, in fact, lost her cool.

“I’ve been watching her,” Trump said. “I have been watching her for a long period of time. She’s not the same person. She’s lost it.” The president then gave a vague recap of his consistency throughout his career, calling himself an “extremely stable genius.”

To make sure that reporters understood his mental stability, Trump then went around the room, demanding his staffers provide testimony of just how “calm” their boss was in the meeting with Pelosi. Kellyanne Conway began the very calm affair, followed by Mercedes Schlapp, Larry Kudlow, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

And then he shares a fake video of Pelosi suggesting that she was slurring/stammering her words at a press conference/interview.
The Washington Post first reported on the appearance of the videos, finding that footage of an appearance by Pelosi at the Center for American Progress on Wednesday had been slowed 25 percent, in a manner that made Pelosi's speech seem impaired. One version posted on a Facebook page called Politics WatchDog had been viewed nearly 2 million times as of Thursday evening and sparked comments like, "Omg is she drunk or having a stroke???" and, "She's drunk!!!!!!"

Trump himself worked to extend the storyline of Pelosi stumbling with her speech by tweeting a separate, tightly edited video showing Pelosi stumbling over some words during a press conference on Capitol Hill. The president of the United States tagged the video with the headline, “PELOSI STAMMERS THROUGH NEWS CONFERENCE."

The irony of Trump trying to make fun of someone for mispronouncing/slurring words is incredible.

    Just pathetic really.

I've always wondered how these insufferable prigs had such a high profile. All they seemed to do was put tweets where Jacob Wohl did.

I never understood any of it.. All of them on both sides , spending their lives trying to be the 1st to comment on a Trump tweet with some guff or other.

There were about a half a dozen accounts that were guaranteed to be among the 1st 10 or so replies to every single Trump tweet from both sides..

Just a weird way to spend your time.

And yes, I do see the irony in the above , coming from a moderator of a Politics discussion forum!!

Like or dislike Trumps politics, I've never witnessed such an overtly insecure public figure in all my life; it's one thing to be unconventional in ones approach to the murky world of politics, but some elements stay true & good advice: stoicism in the face of criticism - especially when it comes from your enemies - is a given. To take the grammatically clunky catchphrase from his own wife, he really has no capacity to "be best". One shuts ones mouth and takes the lumps. That's politics, hell I thought that was business too.

Getting your staff to speak to your ... Jesus, your stability and calm is remarkable, un-ironic behaviour from a grown adult; real "my mom thinks I'm cool" level of reassurance & self-unawareness. As if the near-constant reminders of his election victory, or his fictional approval numbers weren't already hints towards that.

Sigh. And yet. His party and supporters will dissemble and waffle, that we're the demented ones, obsessing about a man himself wracked with obsessions and insecurity. If he wasn't such a morally compromised individual, it'd be kind of tragic and deserving of our sympathy Was there any a more clearcut example of the Useful Idiot in party politics? Is there any equivalent in US/UK/IE politics?

Not that he's as insecure but equally a Useful idiot (although it seems to be a well crafted persona) would be Boris Johnson

Trump in the Whitehouse and a now Boris now heading for Downing Street. I'd say that is Mission Accomplished with regard to defeating the West. Those fools thought missiles and bombs are were what made them strong.

Seeing the reference to ABC News in this reminded me of another nugget from his Presser in the Rose Garden yesterday.

His staff handed out a flyer to everyone present which was a print out of an ABC information piece.

They used some of the stats from it for that poster on the lectern , the page talked about the costs of the investigation , the number of subpoenas etc.

However for some inexplicable reason they didn't show the 2nd page of the ABC information piece.

    Can anyone work out why?

Stands true to form that they'd release a redacted version of something
