For convenience I have always used cityjet to fly home to Dublin. You get your seat and hold luggage included in the price and you even get a snack on board!

When it was announced Aer Lingus were directly taking over their flights (In direct competition with BA the other incumbent on the LCY-DUB route...Collusion????) I was worried and read that they would use a special fare class to retain the "benefits"

Just went to book flights now and lo and behold BA and Aer lingus roughly the same price and MUCH more expensive then used to be. And no baggage, no seat and no snack (FWIW it was a drink and a bar..but still)

How was IAG allowed get the monopoly on this? And thanks for removing the cityjet benefits AL!

IAG don't have a monopoly flying from Dublin to London.

Has cityjet ever actually made a profit? perhaps that is why aer lingus put up prices when they took over.

CityJet have essentially ditched their own brand and flying their own routes, they are now fully a charter and leasing (ACMI) airline, operating flights for other large airlines. The Dublin to London city route is actually still operated by city jet, on city jet aircraft, however under contract in partnership with Aer Lingus .
As mentioned above they could not compete and operate profitably as a standalone airline. Hence they are mainly focusing on ACMI, contract flying and charters. These are the areas they make profit in like any business they do what makes commercial sense.
Aer Lingus only agreed to keep the city jet benefits for an interim period whilst the flights transition from the city jet brand to the Aer Lingus one .
The fact that this route did not last long term using the city jet brand and model indicate it was not commercially viable any longer. While that may be disappointing for the passengers who use the service unfortunately that’s business.
If it helps I generally find Aer Lingus allow you to check in hand luggage size case for free particularly if flights are busy due to cabin locker space limitations. As for the snack and the general cost of the fares on the route I would probably give it a few months, level of demand and popularity of the route for both airlines will determine going forwards how costly tickets may be.
