There is some serious delusions still at the heart of UK politics. Somehow voting against her deal doesn't mean you have no confidence in her but she can continue on with trying to get a deal. This also means going back to the EU to get a new deal on the backstop, but there is no way to get rid of it.

At one moment I feel that we are heading towards a second referendum, then I see nothing else than no-deal. We will be sleepwalking into no-deal because May has gotten into bet with the DUP and because she ignored all voices but her own in the negotiations.

Sky news commentators saying Johnson has taken leave of his senses and he’s gone wildly off message.

That’s the understatement of the year

My view now is that TM's compromise position has satisfied no-one, she now needs to go fully one way or the other.

There is no way that a harder Brexit will be supported by anyone except the hardline Brexiteers so the only way she can get anything through the HoC is getting cross party support (i.e. softer Brexit).

This will result in a split in the Tory party.
It's as likely if not more likely it could split Labour. There is massive tension building up inside Labour over Corbyn's stubbornness.

If he doesn't shift position to being in favour of a second referendum once his no confidence vote fails, all hell could break loose in the party.

They can end up with a Peoples Vote or a Soft Brexit, really don't care which they end up with.
There is major schisms in both parties.

Who's the guy on the left talking sense? Actually, they seem to have an entirely sensible panel tonight.

Gone off message ? As opposed to when he's stayed on message.

How much longer do you think May has left now?

Sammy Wilson believes that the EU will be the ones who lose if there is not a deal so it's up to them if they don't want to suffer and want to keep their countries stable.

Also seems to think that the EU are going to be shocked by the level of the defeat and seems to be implying that UK will just tell them what they want and they will get it.

Seems to also believe that getting one over our government is the most important thing and that seems to be the driving force behind the likes of him. Completely deluded.

I'm not sure who is the most laughable, him or Boris, probably Boris just.

Wilson actually said the EU should now wake up and smell the coffee. Header.

Yeah a lot of sensible comment on Sky News for once and the woman doing the interviews in HoC seems to be on the ball and asking tough questions

This has nothing to do with getting one over Ireland,it's about Britain and whether they have the bottle to reverse brexit for the good of the country .

The more I am hearing here the more I am convinced the EU have to tell them to take a long walk. Its the deal on the table or none.

The EU cannot and should not be seen to be weak in this. Nor should they with their actions encourage other member states to try and leave. Arrogance from some UK MPs here is unreal........sure we will go back to the EU and tell them to change the deal...they need us. Unreal stuff.

Vernon Bogdanor. Eminent academic with expertise in EU politics. Disliked by brexiteers.

That is Beth Rigby doing the interviews.

I am astonished that Sky is giving Isabel Oakeshott time, seeing as she had emails from Leave.eu showing them breaking rules during the election and it was her hacked emails that showed this to the world. She sat on the evidence while she was writing the book on Aaron Banks.

It fairly simple, the EU would accept a softer Brexit, eg, CU and parts of SM , no problem. It would also get a majority in the HoC. Problem is TM and her Cabinet cannot achieve that.

That is what the EU wants as well, clarity on what the UK wants.

Well obviously the economies of both France and Germany will tank if they can no longer trade freely with Northern Ireland

The challenge must be to get it tabled and a vote on it. What would the procedure be to get that done in the HoC?
As far as I know, it can be done with a simple motion. No legislation required.

Definitely not : the UK are not going to reopen negotiations on a cake and eat it arrangement which suits Brexiteers. Not a chance.

According to UK law, UK will leave EU on 29 March. That statute of law exists in UK. It is already the law of the land.

Labour have said they are prepared to table multiple votes of no confidence in the government. (there is no limit on of often they can do this)

    Breakdown of the vote tonight

    defeat.jpg

Approximately a third of theresa May's party voted against her - you'd say her position is untenable at this stage.

But with the conservative party rules, is her stepping down voluntarily the only way she can be deposed as party leader? I thought there couldn't be a challenge to her from within the party for 12 months on the basis of her win in the leadership contest a few weeks ago.
