No, that's an opinion. It's not a fact. An important distinction given the state of the show.

Yes have a polite meeting with TM but do the whole thing in public, with cameras rolling.

Whats sad (and frightening) is the UK risk contaminating the food supply of this country in the future should they persist in their delusional thinking.

In that event its very likely there will be full border controls by that point or a UI as those kind of trade deals still would take significant time to sign and organise. No way in hell theyre gonna allowed substandard produce to be funnelled through our country.

sad thing is that I'm sure we'll hear it from someone else soon enough

very quickly these lies become truths when enough dishonest charlatans repeat them

and in the main the collection of Brexiteers, little englanders, xenophobes and the para lovers are only waiting to share

You'd think in this "Information Age" that it's easier than ever to fail to spin things. But actually, there's a lot of people who'll just see his tweet and go "I knew it!" and get suckered in.

Gerard Batten? Solid bone from ear to ear. He is certainly dense enough not to spot that "statistic" as completely incredible.

Right so assuming its a hard brexit

What to start stocking up on ?

Assuming the HoC Caves or the EU caves at the last minute , or there isnt a deal this will still leave us at March 28th and everyone else will have emptied the shelves.... so what to buy ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,234 ✭✭✭✭Hurrache

Richard Chambers has put it up to him with the offer that they go to one crossing alone and count them.

Stock up on specialty items i would say if your really going to panic but considering Ireland is ranked 2nd in the world for food security as we are perfectly able of feeding ourselves, unlike the UK, there should be no need to stock up on basic essentials.

We may see some small amounts of panic buying similar to the snows last year but the real issue there was an inability to restock which unless we have another weather event should not be an issue.

Jeremy Corbyn is so behind the curve on Brexit ...
Its pathetic to see him in the HoC asking his front bench questions as May talks so he can answer her ...he hasnt a clue

Labour need to get him out and get Yvetter Cooper in
Imagine if Labour had a real leader

Keir Starmer for me but Labour is hamstrung by the far left element so a change of leader might not make much of a difference. On that, an idle thought. Labour's leadership could do with less ideology whereas the Tory leadership could do with more.

Didn’t know the video of Sammy Wilson agreeing with “get the ethnics out” still existed.
The feeble apology gave me a chuckle in these depressing times.

He's now deleted the tweet for some reason?

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,696 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

Was listening to the latest Brexitcast there, had to turn it off as it really is rubbish.

But yet again, Kathy Adler was making the point about the EU position and Laura and the rest simply do not want to listen. I turned off when Laura brought up how awful it was that Sabine Wayand had pointed out how disfunctional the UK side were and that it was really a terrible and disrespectful thing to say. Kathy pointed out the almost racist things that had been said numerous times even in the HoC, never mind across the airwaves and Laura just laughed it off.

Its the failure of people to realise in significant amounts that someone like that guy saying something doesnt automatically mean theyre being truthful. When they fail to backup their statements with verifiable facts thats usually a sign theyre either ignorant and havent bothered to check their facts or intentionally lying and not interested in the truth.

One thing in this age is to make sure statements are being backed up with facts failing to do so is letting people like that MEP mislead others.

I wonder what that reason might be :D

I know we're not supposed to throw insults around here but surely it's objectively accurate to consider him an absolute moron

This whole idea that the EU should stay tough is like shooting yourself in the foot.
We, the people of the Republic of Ireland, are the innocent bystanders in all of this. The EU have a responsibility to protect us. We don't want higher taxes and we certainly don't want the troubles starting again.
You can drag Teresa May under the bus all you want and the Tories and Corbyn and they all deserve it but the EU have a responsibility to us. They are looking at the UK and deciding they are going to win the battle instead of considering all the members of the EU that reside on this island.

He is, and his deleted tweet is proof of it.
Of course you'll always have similar morons that'll fall for it.

Ultimately this whole fiasco is a British creation, they created it, they fuelled it, they owned it and they abandoned reason and pragmatism for ideological BS and empty soundbytes. We wanted none of this but they're the ones for all intent pushing for it. For all intents and purposes were not looking for tough talking because of Bravdo but because we have to stand firm against this kind of ignorance and stupidity and protect ourselves from it. When it comes down to it though if the British break an international treaty because it doesnt suit them it will have consequences beyond this island for them.

    So what is the alternative?

Allowing UK to undermine the entire foundation of the EU means that we would face many Brexit type calls from other countries and would likely see the beginning of the end of the EU as it currently stands.

The UK have indicated their willingness to turn their backs on the GFA. TM has gone back onthe December 2017 agreement. She has gone back on the agreement of December 2018. Why would you think they will not continue on in that vein?

With that goes the key driver behind the Irish economy.

What's more worrying is that there's an audience for this kind of total nonsense.
The Brexiteers and Trumpeteers have all realised that if you just keep throwing nonsense into social media that a % of it will be believed by people who won't bother to fact check.

Don't bother. This was discussed in the Cork forum and he dropped in to tell us it was the loud voices on the remain side that frighten more people and that it all definitely weakens the EU (without anything to back it up of course).
Lies by Batten don't mean much to some.

You are looking at the situation completely backwards. The UK have a proven track record of reneging on agreements they have made, if we say sure go ahead with these "technological arrangements" and then next year they decide "nope that doesn't work for us cus of all our new trade agreements and also we were lying our asses off about the technology" and up goes a border we have no recourse and we are back to the troubles anyway. Basically if we don't get a backstop it is inevitable a border will be erected by the UK for one reason or another, like maybe when they realise they now have a completely open border to europe that all the people they were looking to keep out can just walk across.

If you can't see the EU are fighting our corner and the only solution to this is a backstop i really don't think there's much help for you.

Also I don;t know where you got the higher taxes thing from.

Calling these guys morons doesn’t seem unreasonable given the stuff they come out with, but I don’t believe we should ever underestimate their ability to pander to their constituency and make capital out of ridiculous positions.

If anyone has the stomach for it - just barely kept my dinner down myself - they could check out James Delingpole response on breitbart to his humiliation by Andrew Neil last week. Manages to spin himself as a victim and just imagine how that plays out to the thousands and thousands of sympathisers who will read that guff.

Its all well and good if they choose to do so at their own peril but stirring the pot and peddling lies only works so long. When it comes down to it though that doesnt work against parties who dont respond to that kind of BS and who have the power to make their lives very uncomfortable.

To me this notion that Ireland should for some reason join the UK in this daft Brexit drive is a bit like having your psycho, abusive ex turn up being all manipulative and asking you to climb into the boot of their car and abandon all your friends and independent life for them.

There's no way Ireland's falling for that and we know damn well that there's also no sailing off into the sunset and pretending that the English right wing suddenly has huge love and respect for little old Ireland.

It's a manipulative plot to get us out of the way and then the next step would be to immediately throw us under a bus.

They're negotiating in bad faith with the EU and they've been utterly two-faced when dealing with Ireland.
