Extending a standard semi-d

I live in a standard late 1970s 4-bed semi-detached house. The downstairs area is largely fine, with a grand-size living room at the front, small cloakroom loo, and then a kitchen-dining room running the full width of the house at the back. The staircase is on the inside wall.

Upstairs has a bedroom in each 'corner' - one larger and one small to the front, same to the rear and the bathroom is in the middle, with a window on the gable. The staircase sits in such a way that no 'box' is required.

I believe the total floor area is just below 1,000 square feet.

The problem is the bedrooms are too small and entirely lacking in storage. While lots of my neighbours have a single-storey extension downstairs to enlarge the kitchen area, that's not going to resolve my bedroom space/storage issue. I am only starting to think about this but what kind of extension can be done to improve bedroom space on two-storey semi-d?

The dimensions of the bedrooms are currently about 12'x12' for the two double rooms, and 8'x9' for the two singles.

Things to consider: I don't know if an attic conversion would be an option. As well as sloping upwards from the front and the rear, the roof slopes inwards from the gable as well. I know most renovation projects seem obsessed with adding extra en suites everywhere and I'd have no particular desire for more bathrooms, just to make my bedrooms sufficiently large for more than just a bed and a chest of drawers.

I don't even know where to start on such a project, or how much it might cost, or how long it might take, how long we would need to move out for, etc. Any pointers or ideas would be welcome.

Speak to a local architect, surveyor or technician.
Somebody that does drawings and planning applications to get an idea of what you want to do and take it from there.
