Just in from a night out and was listening to music as you do. I heard the lyrics "nobody said it was easy but no-one ever said it would be this hard" and I just thought of life/**** happens in general. Now I have heard this song loads but tonight I thought thats a great line. What song lyrics are your favourite/have made you think?

My father and mother and whole family passed away last week and we played this

My boot scootin' baby is drivin' me crazy
My obsession from a western, my dance floor date
My rodeo Romeo, a cowboy god from head to toe
Wanna make you mine, better get in line
    5, 6, 7, 8

Always, no, sometimes think it's me
But you know I know when it's a dream
I think, er, no, I mean, er, yes
    But it's all wrong
That is I think I disagree

No, he was a simpleton. I think it's hereditary.

My cousin dyed yesterday and we played this for him.

Yo, listen up, here's a story
About a little guy that lives in a blue world
And all day and all night and everything he sees is just blue
    Like him inside and outside
Blue his house with a blue little window and a blue Corvette
And everything is blue for him
    And himself and everybody around
'Cause he ain't got nobody to listen to

In all seriousness though when Princess Diana died I think that song moved us all to tears.

It seems to me that the ting goes skrrrahh
    Pap, pap, ka-ka-ka
    Skidiki-pap-pap
    And a pu-pu-pudrrrr-boom
    Skya
    Du-du-ku-ku-dun-dun
    Poom, poom
    You don' know

With fingers walk the darkness down
Gather up the gold you've found
    You fool, it's only moonlight
If you stop to take it home
Your hands will turn to butter
You better leave this dream alone
    Try to find another.

    The curtain's a sea anemone
In the way it sways to the slow breeze
I lie spread out on the floor, looking at these things
    Most of them are yours

    And it's so nice
    Sitting very still
    Without those old shoes
    I could never fill

Starfish with its arms out in a daze
Staring at the stars through an ocean haze
Was I one you wished upon, burned out like a light bulb
    When you turned me on

    And it's so nice
    Sleeping here all alone
    With my ashtray
    White courtesy telephone

Now I'm making out the shapes
Like the shower rod, can it take my weight?
I will tell you I am fine
I got some news, friend, feels like I'm dying

Turtle on its back in the desert sea
And you look like a cool drink just slightly out of reach
    Draw myself into the shell
Waiting on a sign from God or a nod from hell

    And it's so nice
    Sitting very still
    Without those old shoes
    I could never fill

Now we're turning on the lights
It's the first day of my second life
Take my name off of the lease
You can even keep the name, it never suited me

Bland is massive. Look at George Ezra, Ed Sheeran and Michael Buble. A very high number of people don't like music but they don't like silence either, so those acts are perfect.

I think Coldplay have a few good songs, to be fair, and are nowhere near as bland as the above.

It could have been Wee Daniel singing for all I care. Not a Coldplay discussion as such as it was the lyrics no matter who sang them that struck a chord. Some beautiful serious answers here. Music is universal and touches everyone in different ways.

I was nodding along until the last line.
Modern commercial music is horrific, Sheeran is a ginger Chris de Burgh and all everyone loves him. We live in a world where Chris de Burgh type music is hip, God help us.

Music is subjective and we're all free to like whatever we want, if you like the lyricsband they strike a chord with you that's great. To me the line you quoted is asinine, but each to their own.

What about when your lady lover died at sea? These lyrics brought a tear to my eye

I wish I was a pirate shipwreck down in Mexico
Where the oceans turn to silver and the beaches turn to gold
I'd make love to some senorita in that town
I'd get on my boat and I'd sail the ocean round
I wish I was a pirate out there under my own flag
Running for no reason and no reason to turn back
The salt and rum on my tongue, sails tattered and torn
Laughing in the devil's face, riding out the storm

You let me violate you, you let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you

Help me, I broke apart my insides, help me, I've got no soul to sell
Help me, the only thing that works for me, help me get away from myself

I wanna f*ck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna f*ck you like an animal
    My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God

You can have my isolation, you can have the hate that it brings
You can have my absence of faith, you can have my everything.

Help me tear down my reason, help me, it's your sex I can smell
Help me, you make me perfect, help me become somebody else

It's believed to be a newborn baby unfortunately, but Bobbie has always refused to confirm.

There was a film inspired by it (which Gentry was involved in the writing of) however the above doesn't happen in the film.

I think the lyrics to Coat of Many Colours by Dolly Parton are really beautiful. Always gives me a lift and a sense of perspective:
    Back through the years
    I go wonderin once again
Back to the seasons of my youth
I recall a box of rags that someone gave us
And how my momma put the rags to use
There were rags of many colors
    Every piece was small
    And I didn't have a coat
And it was way down in the fall
    Momma sewed the rags together
    Sewin every piece with love
She made my coat of many colors
That I was so proud of
As she sewed, she told a story
From the bible, she had read
About a coat of many colors
Joseph wore and then she said
Perhaps this coat will bring you
    Good luck and happiness
And I just couldn't wait to wear it
And momma blessed it with a kiss
    Chorus:

    My coat of many colors
That my momma made for me
    Made only from rags
But I wore it so proudly
    Although we had no money
I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
    My momma made for me

So with patches on my britches
    Holes in both my shoes
In my coat of many colors
    I hurried off to school
Just to find the others laughing
    And making fun of me
In my coat of many colors
    My momma made for me

And oh I couldn't understand it
For I felt I was rich
And I told them of the love
My momma sewed in every stitch
And I told em all the story
Momma told me while she sewed
And how my coat of many colors
Was worth more than all their clothes

    But they didn't understand it
And I tried to make them see
    That one is only poor
Only if they choose to be
Now I know we had no money
But I was rich as I could be
In my coat of many colors
    My momma made for me

    And now...
    That she's older
    In the embers of romance
Pay two mortgages and leccy bills
    Been comfortable and that
    Nobody told her
That she'd ever reach the stage
    Where her husband bores her
Or she lies about her age
    He's compromising
At least he's got a job for life
Get born, get school, get job, get car
Pay tax and find a wife
