Did't see a ton this year and nothing stood truly out. I enjoyed this one though (supporting T Swift in Croker):

    Charli XCX

Top of my head in no particular order

Snapped Ankles at End of the Road
    Rolling Stones in Croke Park
    Idles at the Button Factory
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard in the Olympia
Nine Inch Nails at Mad Cool
Roger Waters in the Three Arena

  • Registered Users Posts: 967 ✭✭✭phunkadelic

The ones that stand out for me:

    Shame in Whelans
    Daithi at Other Voices
Unknown Mortal Orchestra in Academy (short, but all killer)
Jon Hopkins at Vicar st (pity visuals failed so early on though)

Paul Weller at the Olympia, sensational.

Car Seat Headrest for me in May, was the day before The Rolling Stones played. The setlist was just perfect and because of the lo-fi nature of their records it was great to hear them louder and punchier live. Interpol last month too also in the Olympia was excellent.

Not just gig of the year, but the best gig I've ever been to - David Byrne at The Point. Like nothing I've ever seen before, or am likely to ever see again. There are no words to describe how good it was.

Up there with mine as well. AND I MET HIM THE NEXT DAY!

That was a cracking week and a half, David Byrne, Parquet Courts (wow) and Johnny Marr.

Nick Cave sold out straight away (massive fan) so bought tickets for Ty Segall instead. Top gig in the Tivoli but I bitterly regret not trying harder to get Nick Cave tickets.

Honourable mention to Ezra Furman in Tivoli as well.

A solid year considering there was no glasto!

Very much so. Loads more in there too. Too many to mention. Pearl Jam and Depeche Mode didn't even make the list!

Paul Weller at the Olympia, sensational.

Loved this one too, have to say.

    Nick Cave in Kilmainham

A personal highlight was seeing 3 of the all time great frontmen (Jagger, Cave, Lydon) in the space of 3 months

    1. Queen & Adam Lambert in Marlay Park in July, I didn't shut up about it for two months after.

Adam Lambert is, as Brian May said, a gift from the Gods.

    2. David Byrne at 3Arena in October.

    3. Tom Misch at Electric Picnic.

    Gutted I missed Dweezil Zappa.

    Roll on 2019.

Edit: Honourable mention to the Roy Orbison Hologram at 3Arena in April.

Far more than the sum of its parts and looking forward to Maria Callas and Amy Winehouse on the way.

    Roger Waters - 3 Arena
    Beach House - Vicar Street
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Olympia

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,014 ✭✭✭Wooderson

Bang for your buck = Idles Button Fac
    Stagecraft = NIN Madrid
Pleasant surprise = Gomez debut album at EP
Take me back Mr Timemachine = Pearl Jam Madrid
Better return in ‘19 = King Gizz Olympia

    1) Fever Ray at B&S
    2) Shane McGowan Birthday gig - especially seeing Cait O Riordan playing and discovering Lisa O Neill
    3) Nick Cave at RHK

Biggest miss of the the year for me was The Blaze at EP - had to offload my tickets last minute, next time....

I am still undecided where to place Lauryn Hill in y overall list - but it pretty good!

Went to a few this year but probably the best for me was Lankum back in March in the Roisin Dubh in Galway. Great performance by the musicians, appreciate crowd, just an all round great gig.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,732 ✭✭✭delbertgrady

    Hmmm. In order of appearance...

    Public Service Broadcasting, The Academy
    The Rolling Stones, Croke Park
    a-ha, Cork Marquee
    Taylor Swift, Croke Park
    Paul Simon/James Taylor/Bonnie Raitt, RDS
    Biffy Clyro, The Helix
    Suede, Bord Gais Energy Theatre
    David Byrne, 3Arena
    John Fogerty/Steve Miller Band, 3Arena
    U2 (first night), 3Arena

Some great runners-up: First Aid Kit, Kacey Musgraves/Soccer Mommy, Robert Plant/Van Morrison, Steven Wilson.

It was a really superb year for concerts, probably the best in a decade or so. Very difficult to come up with a top ten, but I've settled on this fairly diverse batch, which I've listed in chronological order, as it's impossible to rank them. I've decided to vary it a bit, in terms of both artists and venue size.
Other than the Croke Park shows, I was on the barrier for a lot of them and I'd a seventh row seat for David Byrne.
If I had to choose one as my gig of the year, I'd probably go for Suede, which was absolutely phenomenal. This might be a shock to anyone who thinks anything could be better than David Byrne, but while that was obviously a great show, I probably enjoyed Suede more. Plus, there's an element of absence makes the heart grow fonder; I've seen David Byrne several times in the last fifteen years, but the last time I saw Suede was nearly twenty years ago.
    An amazing year, though.

2024 Gigs and Events: David Suchet, Depeche Mode, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, The Smile, Pixies, Liam Gallagher John Squire/Jake Bugg, Kacey Musgraves (x2), Olivia Rodrigo, Mitski, Muireann Bradley, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Eric Clapton, Girls Aloud, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Rewind Festival, The Smashing Pumpkins/Weezer, Henry Winkler, P!nk, Pearl Jam/Richard Ashcroft, Taylor Swift/Paramore, Suede/Manic Street Preachers, Muireann Bradley, AC/DC, Deacon Blue/Altered Images, The The, blink-182, Coldplay, Gilbert O'Sullivan, Nick Lowe, David Gilmour, ABBA Voyage, St. Vincent, Public Service Broadcasting, Crash Test Dummies, Cassandra Jenkins.

2025 Gigs and Events: Billie Eilish (x2)

For me (from what I can remember):

    8. Nightmares on Wax - District 8
    7. Jon Hopkins - Vicar Street
    6. Beck/Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - 3 Arena
    5. Beach House - vicar Street
    4. Gorillaz - Malahide, despite the venue
    3. Suede - Bord Gais Theatre
    2. The xx - The Tivoli - Great to see them in such a small venue.
    1. Nick Cave with Patti Smith in Kilmainham

Most disappointing - LCD Soundsystem in Malahide and Arctic Monkeys in 3 Arena.
