Got the email about Lastpass changing the free tier yesterday. But disappointing as I use it daily on my phone and pc, whereby I'd have to move to the premium tier to continue to do that.

Recommendations online spoke highly of Bitwarden. Tried it there this morning, exported everything from Lastpass into bitwarden and I'm up and running. Extremely painless, the export/import even sorted things like secure notes into the correct places etc.

Delighted, and because it's open source, I might just subscribe after all. Think it's $10 per year, seems well worth it. Lastpass was good, but the profiteering locking of device types instead of device quantities left a sour taste.

While in the middle of the transfer this morning, I noticed some bad practice of mine I'd not really thought of before...i was storing all my 2fa backup codes in Google drive, potentially opening the door to all my services should my Google account ever be compromised. I ended up encrypting the folder with 7zip, and storing the password on another cloud service, with an unassuming filename.

Any tips on a better way to secure 2fa stuff? USB? Write them down?

Profiteering? Yes, shame on them for trying to build a business, who do they think they are.

It's always going to be a hard sell, to move something that was previously free, to a paid subscription model...with no additional benefits. There are a few community friendly ways to do this, which they've opted not to do, so forgive me if I don't find their solution agreeable. No need for the sarcasm either, we're all adults here aren't we?

I've been subscribed to lastpass for a few years now. In the past they didn't sync between phone and PC without a sub, that must have changed so I've probably been paying for nothing... eh, they provide a decent service, even if the android integration leaves a lot to be desired.

I'd argue a benefit of a security product is it lasting so long without any breaches, i.e. longevity and dependability.

As I say, there are community friendly ways to handle a transition of this nature, which can greatly smooth the waves out while retaining would be customers.. (hugely important if shifting the focus to revenue generation). The way they've chosen though, strongarms many long term users onto a paid tier. Their subreddit makes for interesting reading on the handling of it. They've lost of a lot of potential customers in how they've presented the changes, which is a shame.

They've priced themselves significantly higher than competitors, they've ignored years of use and promotion by long term users (who could easily have been given better loyalty discounts to move tiers), they could have presented a device limit instead of a platform limit (2 devices regardless of platform would have been nice, even with a small sub).

So no, I'm not giving them carte blanche just because companies need to profit to survive. Yes they do, but LogMeIn have clearly put two fingers up to long term users, and to their community, frankly it seems either out of touch, or a bit desperate (the latter being more concerning). For every ten people jumping ship now, they could have retained quite a few of them with some more carefully though out measures, but they didn't, and that's just bad business.

Who would your rate as their strongest competitors? I checked out the alternatives a few years ago and LastPass seemed the best at the time. I haven't done any research since.

Bitwarden seems to be the broad consensus. Native OS apps, mobile apps, browser extensions, 2fa support, all the same bells and whistles. Free tier covers all the aforementioned, but there's a premium tier with enhanced 2fa stuff etc, for €10 per year if needs be.

I switched over this morning, the export/import process works very well.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Myki looks interesting as well, and no exposure to the cloud.

Is there any that work with windows desktop apps like GeForce experience and uPlay. Sick of having to re-login to those everytime they do an update as I can never remember the password.

I'm pretty sure all of the popular ones have desktop apps, tho how well they work I'm not sure as I only use the mobile apps and the browser extensions

    I sold a system with a 1070 and 3600 in December for 750.

I'd be able to sell it for way more now.

    The market is so broken.

I stuck my 5700xt on ebay once I got an order placed for the 6900xt. It sold for 800. When I bought it in Oct 2019, the whole prebuilt system that it came in cost 1100 (3600, 32GB RAM). The card's RRP was ~400 new. I feel guilty selling it for that tbh.

What are 1070's selling for these days? It's the exact card I have in my ageing system. I've a serious itch to build a new pc but as you say, the market is beyond broken

Right now, its the worst time ever to build a pc. I have an itch for new system too, but when logic kicks in, and over ePenis, you realise that it's better of sticking to your current setup for now.

Aye, unfortunately true. Even if I had the money, it wouldnt sit right with me to drop the kind of prices being asked at the mo. I was eyeing up a 5800x/3080 build, but realistically by the time I can get my hands on a 3080 at close to normal money, Zen 4 will be in or close to the picture. So damn frustrating.

Think the 5700xts are really popular for mining because if the hashrate they can get for a low enough wattage.

I sold my 1080 to a miner there for €400 and thought I was doing ok,should have asked for €800:P

Must throw up my 980ti be just sitting in my machine which hasn't been used since Christmas! Might actual get a decent price for it!

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,415 ✭✭✭.G.

Sold my 2080ti for 850 yesterday. Had an offer for 900 but he couldn't travel to collect. 850 obviously more than it's worth usually but I'd have got way more than that if I'd put it on ebay rather than Adverts.

    Upgrade to a 6900xt for 170 quid.

  • Registered Users Posts: 663 ✭✭✭MidlanderMan

I'd nearly throw my 6900xt on Adverts for €2000 just to see if anyone is mad enough to bid it.

What's the market value of a machine with a 5600x, 6900xt, 32gb of 3600mhz DDR4, and an MSI B550 Gaming Plus with 2.5tb of mixed NVME and Sata Storage?

    I sold my 5700xt below RRP to a boardsie coz I'm not a ****.

Aren't you great? Can you hear us down here from your high horse?

No-one, absolutely no-one needs a high-powered GPU. If people want to pay over the odds for them, that's just supply and demand / market forces at play for what is a luxury item or a cash-generative good if used for mining. If you want to hand over your own cash to other people, crack on, I'm sure the recipient was grateful and you feel good about it.

I didn't know anyone who needed a card so I stuck it on ebay. I'm sure the guy who bought it is a miner. But you crack on with name-calling like you're in the schoolyard.

2.5k easily I'd imagine. A prebuilt from pc specialist with similar specs is over 3k.

Quick one for ye, I've an 8600k & ASUS Prime Z370-A sitting idle in a box sine I switched to 5800x, reckon there's much resale value there?

Torn whether to sell em off or to repurpose it for something else...

I mean let's be real here, it's not just "high-end" cards. People are now paying way, way over the odds for all types of cards, right down to the low-end mainstream.
