Hope they put that segment online, it was mostly playing in the background for me during a commercial

That opening match, absolutely flawless stuff, such a great way to start a wrestling show. Rey Fenix is one of the best wrestlers in the world so made sense for him to get the win over the tag specialist.

Loved Allin/Mox too, Mox has his mojo back and it's great to see, he's put in numerous great displays since escaping WWE, the avalanche paradigm shift looked brilliant. And totally agree that Allin has it, the body bag vid was really good stuff.

Hikaru Shida winning was absolutely the correct call too, she's a different class to Baker/Rose and the likes, she should be the one to take the title off Riho. Another great show from AEW.

    NXT - 915,000
    AEW - 893,000

Technial victory for NXT but moral victory for AEW. The end of Raw promised that the big stars were coming to NXT and they still only did 20,000 more viewers than AEW, and lost the key 18-49 demo 0.3 to 0.4.

Why are they using a PPV name from WCW?

A reminder that a company much bigger than AEW that had bottomless pockets, but is now defunct as it was bought out by the current-leaders in the wrestling world, is not exactly something you'd think you'd want fans to associate with AEW.

Cody Rhodes, Jericho, Jim Ross, etc. all seem to be generally intelligent, sensible people. I don't know why they don't steer as far away from associating themselves with 'ye olden days' as possible. They're supposed to be a fresh, dynamic, new company. Digging up old names that WWE forgot to even bother keeping a trademark on seems like a dreadful idea to me.

They do both these things. The talent is 90% new to the national and international audience, and the vibe & feel of the show is fresh. However, by using Ross & Schiavone on comms, and judiciously using legends like the Rock 'n Roll, DDP, Arn, Tully etc they also have enough nostalgia to give the show a comforting familiarity. I think that is one of the strengths of the product to be honest. Using familiar brand names like Bash at the Beach is a solid add to that.

Also, one thing they do well is make the shows feel different. If that Miami shows has a beach theme it'll feel novel. The week after is the Jericho cruise show, which will feel different. Everyone loved those WCW shows at Club La Vela because of the novelty. AEW would be wise to keep going for that.

Is it a moral victory for AEW though? All those ratings say to me is that AEW are only capable of beating the minor league third brand version of WWE. When it comes to star power, WWE far out class AEW.

Even competing with a main WWE show is a huge victory. The idea that someone's comes close and sometimes wins is pretty huge deal - the landscape is different and forcing WWE to do better. Regardless of your feelings towards AEW, the fans win.

They also beat Smackdown one week.

Star power in WWE? I guess Becky was over at the beginning of this year for a bit.

The numbers tell part of the story - you could, if you want, focus on the fact that any audience for NXT is a win for WWE, as all they really care about is hurting the AEW audience, not necessarily beating it outright.

Or alternatively, you could consider that in a week where Punk (kinda) returned to WWE, and in a week where both Becky and Rollins appeared on NXT, AEW were able to hang with them, keep it within 25k, and actually beat them in a key demo.

What does this mean long term? How many shots do WWE have left? All the while this invasion angle keeps going, are regular NXT talent getting over with a wider audience? Or do they risk the dial turning the other way, i.e., that the audience will desensitise to the stars making "shock" appearances? Then what?

On the flipside, AEW are slowly building, and all you see is upside. In just one show last night they put a spotlight on Fenix as a potential future megastar. They set up MJF v Page. They had Scorpio hang with Jericho on a promo. They teased a programme between Hager and the GOAT. They made Mox look like a beast. They got Allin over huge.

So AEW won every demo except the over 50's.

Not sure what that actually say maybe nostalgia was the reason NXT won.

I'm pretty sure NXT won because of the overrun where the AEW audience turned to NXT when it was over.

If NXT didn't win for the 2 hours AEW was on the air against them, which more than likely happened, then you can't really call it a win. It's like they won on an away goal or something.

    Sooo....they did win then.

Yes but lost in every single demographic except the over 50's. They need someone isn't almost 80 years old to take over and bring younger viewers back.

    This.

I enjoy reasoned and balanced discussions but this is certainly the bottom line.

I finally had a chance to sit in on a Friday and watch this. Except it's not on on ITV4 despite the guide telling me it is. There's darts on instead.

Ok on now finally. Stay tuned for more stunning insight from me.

Another great After Dark this week.

Shanna came across brilliantly in the interview.

I considered the idea it's a work but I'm not sure how it would make any sense. He's a babyface, so who's the heel authority figure this would be directed at?

Another great After Dark this week.

Shanna came across brilliantly in the interview.

Spears was great on the colour comms, dry sense of humour, and actually chimed in well with the story of the matches, impact of the moves, etc. I hope Excalibur was taking notes.

    Christ this is gas already!

    Excaliber is sooooooo bad!!

    Jesus Christ.

    "It's the Blade!"

    JR: "the blade?"

    "THE BLADE"

Yeah, say his name again louder mate, that will tell us who the F**K he is....

Not sure how much hair JR has, but he must be losing it quickly working with that fool.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,638 ✭✭✭RollieFingers

Could watch Omega/PAC wrestle each other all day, so smooth in the ring, loved the counter finish. All in all another great episode, Jericho's celebration was gas.

Only thing I'm not a fan of so far in AEW is their use of the Lucha Bros. The best tag team in the world should be beating Best Friends.

Yeah I had no idea who they were. It was like Excaliber was given the script and JR wasn't. Especially since he knew to refer to Allie as The Bunny. (And a nice looking bunny she is).
Wonder if he had someone talking in his ear.

And did they say one of them beat Pentagon? Crazy if true.

Nah JR just doesn't give a flying f**k about his work the last decade basically. Granted Excalibur was OTT but at least he wasn't basically saying "U wot m8" about them like Jim did.
A real shame that Jim didn't miss the show instead of Tony. I genuinely think Jim hasn't taken the time to get to know the talent in AEW never mind people only joining the company. He's only employed through a dated reputation & is a turn off for me as a viewer because it's clear he's not trying.
