Optical vs 3.5mm Sound Quality

Got a Aukey soundbar recently however my telly doesn't have an optical input so it's connected via 3.5mm headphone jack. Sounds much much better and rich than the sound we had before from just the tv. I'm wondering though would the quality be even better if my TV had an optical input?
