the 70s show made a few stars

True, you have Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis who really made it big after this. And to a lesser extent, the ginger one is in Orange is the New Black. Eric Foreman's career fell of a cliff after he left it though, the dumbass

He was in BlacKkKlansman though so he might make a comeback.

I think Idris Elba is a hugely overrated actor. Successful yes, but top actor? Not really. I hope he doesn't get the James Bond role not because I don't think a black person should play the role but I'd hate to see him get it because he's black but not actually worthy.

Yeah. We need more top class actors to play bond, not just some black bloke just cause he's black. Like Pierce Brosnan and Roger Moore.

American Graffiti (George Lucas' miniscule budget film that came out 4 years before Star Wars) had some youthful actors who went on to do rather well for themselves afterwards. The best known ones would be Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford and Ron Howard. Some others - Charles Martin Smith, Cindy Williams, Cindy Williams, Kathleen Quinlan and Suzanne Somers - went on to work in sitcoms and as character actors.

True, I should have included them because even though they were once stars they had fallen out of the limelight and HIMYM gave them a new lease of life.

I love film and TV but many being mentioned are not stars (which implies well known).

I loved AD but I think this is a stretch.

Portia de Rossi breakthrough was on Ally Mc Beal.
Jessica Walter was in big roles in late 70s including being up for emmy and golden globe awards.
Jeffrey Tambor was regularly up for awards in 90s.
Jason Bateman was teen wolf two! Rake of roles in 80s but certainly AD resurrected his career and took it to another level.
Yeah Jessica Walter was best known in the early 70s for playing the psycho in Play Misty For Me. Her name was not a household one when she was in Arrested Development 30 years later - even though she was brilliant.

I agree A.D made Jason Bateman a bigger name though. And Cera definitely. To a lesser extent, Will Arnett.

She's doing alright, but is she's really a 'star'?

She was regular cast, supporting role, of one primetime TV series that averaged top 50 ratings.
She has a minor recurring role in a major movie franchise.
No oscar, emmy or golden globe nominations for her individually

ps I don't mean to single her out specifically, just there are a lot of names listed here that I would not class as a 'star', they have good careers in the industry which is different.

    - Mickey Rourke
    - Paul Reiser
    - Kevin Bacon
    - Ellen Barkin

I won't include Daniel Stern was already in Breaking Away.

I don't know if it gave any of their actors their big break, but The Big Chill (1983) starred

    Tom Berenger
    Glenn Close
    Jeff Goldblum
    William Hurt
    Kevin Kline
    Mary Kay Place
    Meg Tilly
    JoBeth Williams
and famously, Kevin Costner in a scene that was cut.

Great cast, but William Hurt was the lead in Body Heat prior to this, and Kevin Kline's breakthrough was in Sophie's Choice. Glenn Close had already been nominated for an Oscar for The World According to Garp.

And you're right this was the one Costner was cut from not Diner.
I always mix those two movies up!

It would really be an American soap like Days of our Lives if you look into it. Some of the people being mentioned started there way before they were in prime time TV.
Courtney Cox was pretty famous before Friends but younger people wouldn't know that. Ted Danson was in soaps before Cheers.

Davey Jones of the Monkees was in Coronation Street first. The fact Australian soaps focus on younger actors at their core is a big part of why so many can go on afterwards. Where UK soaps have much older cast.
The Hollywood studios pick them as they are unknowns so have no baggage from roles to American audiences. It isn't really about better talent.

    No superstars that's for sure.

    At a stretch...
Nick Berry from Eastenders was the main actor in Heartbeat which was big in the UK and sold around the world.
Sarah Lancashire got her big break in Coronation Street and Happy Valley is now picking up awards internationally.

You'll see a lot of "Before they were Famous" clips from the Mickey Mouse Club of people like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Keri Russell, Ryan Gosling... but I don't think you could claim that it was the show that created them as stars.

But to play devil's advocate, with the Australian soaps, I don't think they 'created' or made the stars, except maybe Kylie.
As in, if you look at the list of people like Guy Pearce, Chris Hemsworth, their breakthrough roles were in Hollywood movies and that's how they came to wide attention and it wasn't like they 'built up' their profile on the back of the soap.

I'm not so familiar with the US soaps, but I think same with those you'd need to distinguish between someone famous for the soap versus someone who became famous later. If someone got a lead role in a show on the back of their profile in the soap, then that's different again.

Dawson's Creek made stars out of Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and on a slightly smaller scale Joshua Jackson.
