We run a small business that ships approx. 1K parcels per month internationally (mainly to domestic USA addresses). We're using the An Post IMBS service which although cheap and reliable, doesn't include any tracking.

It's also laborious as each package has to have a filled out customs sticker, the address and return label and the airmail sticker. The items have to be sorted and bagged and forms filled out with quantities and pricing. We also have to pay for the IBMS service by cheque each time we use it which is 3 times per week.

If we want to send something tracked then we have to manually add the tracking numbers into a postal docket and hand write the addresses. It all adds up to time that could be better spent elsewhere in the business.

Does anyone here ship these volumes internationally and if so, could you recommend a different service or carrier?

I'd also love to know if there's an easier method to ship internationally with An Post? We'd love to be able to print all the required information off in one label.

We have a contact in An Post but they're never too eager to give out much information.

Sorry for hijacking but do you get many lost or undelivered parcels with IBMS and what is the average delivery time to the US? I heard An Posts stats but would be great to hear how you find them.

Also, do you mind me asking what the average value of the parcel contents are? My parcels range from 40 to 75€.

When I was using An Post they suggested getting a lot of the info printed directly onto the product packaging. This may not be suitable for you?

Smallest package they handle is a 20ft container so doubt they’d be interested..

UPS, FedEx and DHL would be a better bet

    Thanks for the information.

The IBMS service is very reliable. The number of lost post is minimal. When it's handed over to Royal Mail or USPS, that's where most of the issues occur but overall we're very happy with it. We've been in touch with An post this week and they have said that there may be a way to automate some of the process so we're just waiting to hear back. Fingers crossed.

Average value of contents is about €30 per package and delivered to a domestic address 90% of the time. Fedex charge a €5 surcharge for deliveries to domestic addresses, so they're not an option for us unfortunately. UPS won't pick up from us and DHL haven't come back to us.

Great to hear. The IBMS USA Rates are unbelievably cheap so I was thinking they are too good to be true but seems that you think otherwise.

    Thanks for the info :)
