Had a sheep welfare inspection here last Oct. On the day the inspector left saying everything was grand. The same inspector rang today wanting to come again tomorrow to see this year's scanning dockets. Is this normal surely if he left and everything was ok he shouldn't be landing again? Like is he going to call in every few months to make sure everything is being recorded properly. I'm sorry I bothered signing up to it now it's not worth the hassle for 10 euro a ewe.

The 12 months for the welfare scheme starts in feb so your scanning mightn't of been in their year

Surely tho if he had come out and the scanning hadn't taken place then that's his tough luck? He looked at the previous years scanning. I just feel this inspector is making it up as he goes along?

we had a paper inspection in the summer of the first year but before it they rang up to see if we had done the scanning in feb otherwise we'd of being sending them empty books. I agree its strange though

Yeah this particular dept inspector is well know in the area as being fussy so I was glad to see the back of him the first time.

Surely a photocopy of the docket or even a picture via email or text would suffice.

Questions must be asked if this practice is allowed by the d department given he had being out already. Is he getting mileage expenses for his 'second' visits....Very suspicious

We're getting €10/ewe for doing very little, I wouldn't be investigating it too closely,
when you see the hoops that suckler farmers have to go through, you'd suspect it never should've been passed in the EU..
They're no known for allowing countries to give subsidies for doing things you'd be doing anyway.
Only 18000farmers out of 34000 have appllied for it, That miserable uptake will mean that it'll be harder to get again

My guess it was a 2018 inspection and your scannin was for 2017. Wont be much drama unless you didnt scan for 2018.

I'm glad you see two department inspections as "very little" I'm of a different opinion. Sure when he's finished here I'll tell him to call into yours he'll be passing your gate on his way home from our place.

My point is why did he come here for a 2018 inspection when he was told that 2018s scanning hadn't taken place. As someone said earlier email copies should be enough but this guy won't accept them. Found out yesterday has calling to another two guys in the area for a second time Monday.

Tis the public service - this inspector is just part of the wider social welfare system.

I’ve seen several departments—not just Dept of Ag—up close and many jobs are little more than variants of the FAS schemes where lads on the dole cut the grass in the local graveyard.

Due to Ireland’s history and geography, jobs are scarce and so the public sector is a way to keep many off the official dole.

You’ll have individual inspectors who’ll just be plain b*stards but it’d be hard for them to act the b*stard if the system was set up right.

It’s not. But that’s the system we’re in.

No mention of updating reference year? Or have I missed it in the article?

Nothing about updating numbers in that article anyway.

First year joining the scheme, Hill flock, will be using scanning as category b option but just wondering if meal feeding lambs post weaning or mineral supplementation post mating woukd be the better choice for a. Already do both as lambs are fed meal and ewes get mineral buckets when with ram

How long do you keep the lambs after weaning? There's a condition of the meal feeding that you keep them for 4 weeks after weaning.

Usually we'd draft away up to weaning but that's not allowed with that option is it after weaning lambs would be arounf for a month or that

That kinda rules out the lamb option so
