so much dog **** on northside foothpaths

    Hi ,

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed loads of dog **** on the foothpaths of Limerick recently. In the last few weeks I've noticed a startling amount of dog **** on my stomping ground , the foothpaths in thomondgate , shelbourne road , ballynanty road , lenght of the ennis road.

First world problems and all that but it's fairly rotten. I have my eyes down whenever I walk so I can dodge the **** , whole ones and ones smeared out flat. Have a no shoes past the front door rule now for the house and the buggys wheels have to get a wash down before I'll bring it inside.

I wonder is it because of a turn up for the economy that more people can afford dogs so we get more dog **** ?

Do they actually ever enforce that fine for dog litter that you see on signage around the place?

My other half was in traffic the other day on shelbourne road and she saw an elderly man with a small terrier on the foothpath. He stopped to let the dog take a dump then off they went not a bother on them leaving it steaming away on the foothpath.

I rarely see dogs running around on their own so I have to assume that its dogs who are being walked by owners who either forget to bring bags/ don't care or don't see what the dog is doing.

I walk & run a lot around the streets of Limerick and especially this area and i find it appalling. I love dogs but its not on having dog faeces every hundred yards. All dog owners need do is carry a bag with them & scoop the poop.

Walk across the bridge to Scoil Ide most mornings, and it's disgusting.

What can be done about it?

Maybe if the powers that be had random days where traffic wardens or some other agents went about in plain clothes , maybe with hidden cameras , observed a dog fouler and followed them home so that they had an address to send a fine to. Wouldn't have to do it often , just a blitz a few times a year so that word gets out and it plays on dog owners minds.

Lower third of the Mill rd & the red path back up to Athlunkard Bridge is a disgrace, I rarely see dogs out on their own so their owners must know & just ignore, often dogs off lead though a good bit away from owner, it really is nasty.

Tweeted the same to Mayor Butler who himself was caught the same day, twice in two weeks I've stepped in it. Once on Henry st and once on upper Mallow st.

If i see anyone not picking it up, I'm taking their picture.

It's a cultural issue here. Dog owners in Europe or north America wouldn't dream of walking away from their dogs poop without scooping it up. People think it's fine here. A bit like drink driving used to be grand back in the day. Council and people need to come down hard on culprits...

And doing what with it exactly? Bring it to the Gaurds? They will laugh in your face.

Castleconnell is awful for this too - especially on the path towards the military bridge and the fairy woods. Try walking down there without either stepping into the stuff or avoiding a buggy from getting it all over its wheels. A lot of ignorant people out there...(not just in Castleconnell obviously)

It seems to be everywhere in the city and suburbs. It's disgusting.

I have a friend who lives in a seaside town in the UK. I was over there recently. The beach is quite big and every morning, everyone takes their dog down there for a run.

The beach is absolutely SPOTLESS. There are notices up warning you to clean up after your dog and literally everyone is carrying poo bags and picking up after their dog.
There are designated bins by the beach just for dog poo and these are emptied daily.

It's a pity nothing like that happens here.

I agree, i've never seen them pick up the horse crap either,
way more than a terriers dump

I raised this with the litter warden once and he explained the problem to me ...

You needed three people to enforce this and to actually catch people in the act

    1. litter warden to approach the owner with a fine
    2. a dog warden to take the dog away if the owner says the dog is not theirs
    3. a police officer to make sure the litter and dog warden are protected in case the owner kicks off , apparently both are physically abused on a regular basis

You can have sympathy with them as it basically boils down to assholes not giving a **** about anyone else besides themselves ... in a lot of cases the animal isnt the one on the lead

The lack of social responsibility is the only problem here. People are just lazy and couldn't care less about their surroundings and other people. Says a lot about Limerick if I'm honest.

I'm interested to know, how do people feel about dogs pooing in fields? I have a dog. I never carry bags, she does, on her little bag carrying gizmo you get for like 2€ that hangs out of her harness.

its not a Limerick thing, it happens all over the country.

It says a lot about Irish people more than anything else

Sure what or who are the Gaurds? I'll be showing it to Limerick Council and if they want the assistance of AGS, then so be it, maybe it will deter the person from not picking up after their dog.
:pac: What difference would that make?

    See above.

No doubt it's an trait of the Irish and it happens everywhere. I lived in Dublin for 10 years and never really noticed it as an issue.

Limerick is filthy though with people constantly littering outside my house on the Ennis road.

I walk my dog every day and always scoop the poop. Also ensure to have additional bags just in case you get the unexpected poop.

The dog is always walked on a lead and never left out on his own.

    I have two issues.

    1. The council could and should do more by way of signage/warning and could also be more proactive in providing stations where they supply poop bags free of charge.

The bags which I use are taken from a seaside town in Co Kerry where the local tidy town's group have them readily available every 100 yards or so around the town.

    2. A lot of dog owners just don't care. I personally have a neighbour who leaves their dog out a number of times each day to take a dump wherever it likes. Mostly in my garden. I have a security camera on the house and have shown the neighbour footage of the dog dumping in the garden on at least 5 occasions. I advised that i would be reporting them should it continue and she promised that it would not. A week or so later it happened again and she blamed her son for leaving the door open.

Basically most people are not responsible dog owners, they don't and won't care until their young children come home with dog poop all over themselves.

Have been to that seaside town, they also have doggy toilets where people leave the bags.

There have been several threads on this topic on the Limerick forum in the past couple of years.

I have to say that when I return home to Limerick to visit family or for a match (like tomorrow) the amount of dog ****e on the streets is very noticeable, much more so than in Dublin or other big cities.

No point blaming Local Authorities: dog owners have to take responsibility for cleaning up after their pets but as so many have already said here, a great many of them couldn't give a damn and as often as not if you challenge them all you get is abuse or worse.

Way less dog ****e on the roads now. Way way less. Used to be that most old fellas would just leave their dogs out on the street. They'd be in packs. Pooping everywhere.

I walk the dog and I never take a bag. Poo is biodegradable whereas plastic is not. My dog poops in responsible places lol.

Definitely not just a Limerick thing. We live in a very quiet area in north county Dublin and I see it everywhere. We have two large dogs and the never walk them without having a pocket stuffed with poo bags. Most of the people in our area, including our closest neighbours, walk their dogs and never pick up their poo. It actually feels a bit pointless picking up the poo when you're one of only 2 or 3 people doing it.

We're just blow ins in the community(only bought here a year ago) so it's not like we can start pulling people up on it when were in such a minority. It is massively frustrating though.

It's toxic though and people can get sick from it. Plus it smells something awful

It's fairly easy to get biodegradable poo bags as well.

I cant help but the think that if there was some political will there that we would easily find a solution to the above scenario where you need 3 people to enforce a dog fouling fine.

For example when the goverment decided to launch it's " war on cyclists" it granted gardai the power to give on the spot fines to cyclists for breaking red lights etc. Gardai were given the power to escort cyclists to ATM machines to get the fines and also had the power to confiscate bikes.

    You don't need
    1. a trained public servant to observe and approach the deadly cyclist
    2. a separate professional to confiscate the bike
    3. another person to protect the above two

Surely something similar for dog owners who paste the foothpaths with **** ?

Even a new class of animal control officer with more legal power ?

It's a public health issue. If someone walks into your home with dog **** on a shoe and a crawling toddler puts their hand where they stepped then your talking maybe toxocariasis and maybe eye disease.

Its not great to have to be preoccupied with where your stepping every time you leave the house.

Out of curiosity what is a responsible place?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,912 ✭✭✭kilburn

Not Limerick but was on the beach in Ballyb this morning and was very much more aware because of this thread.

The amount of people who let their dogs dump on the beach and left it was a disgrace

Sure the tide will wash it away!

Sure isnt sand, fish faeces anyway :)

There are nappy bags that are perfectly sized for dog poo (unless you have something that poops like a horse) and they are biodegradable and cheap and come in large packs.
