    Hi all,

Quick question, we found an old pipe that was confirmed to be an asbestos pipe in the hot press.

Just wondering what the expected rough cost would be to remove it.

    See attached photo.

    Thanks

I cant answer your question.... but I do know it wont be cheap.
Do you know what it goes up into? Is it embedded in concrete in a chimney ?
I've heard of people charging 3 or 400 just to take it away (and dispose of it correctly), but yours needs to be removed from where it is.
Men in white coats will have to come in and seal the place off and work carefully removing it.

You know you can always just cover it up and leave it be.

    Thanks for the reply,

I found a company that will dispose of it for €500. However they won’t disconnect the pipe they said we will have to get a plumber, but I’ve been asking around and no plumber would be willing to do it.

It’s a 6inch small pipe going into the cylinder in the hotpress, easy to get at. Just want it gone, Surveyor said that’s the only one there but still it would be something we would like removed ASAP.

Asbestos only becomes dangerous when it is broken and releases particles, when it is "friable"

Can you not just disconnect it? It’s only dangerous if you cut it.

There are different types of asbestos. Some you can remove yourself. You can take a small sample & have it tested. Wet the area of pipe first & then snip off a small piece. Double bag in sealable plastic bags & send to a lab. It is safer to get an asbestos removal company to carry out a survey for you & also let you know the costs to remove.

What exact purpose is it serving?

We were back up in the house today, the pipe is serving any purpose, it’s disconnected (surveyor never said that) but runs from the hotpress to the attic. When he said 6 inches he must have meant diameter, really poor Surveyor report to be honest!

Would anyone have an idea how much it would cost to remove this pipe, now that I found out it’s not connected but larger than I thought?

Also noticed a lot of the felt ripped in the attic, there is light outside coming through it, I doubt that is normal is it?

I am thinking of getting another surveyor out now as I felt the one we got initially missed a lot of stuff?

There was a number of houses built in the 1970s with forced air heating, furnace in the middle of the house and hot press directly above. Duct work then supplying all rooms around the furnace and hot press directly above. That looks like the old flue from the furnace.

I know in the past people have got builders to remove these pipes, but will probably need to be a specialist contractor if it’s comfired to contain asbestosis. There isn’t loose insulation around it, is there?

Your going to need a roofer also to restore the roof after removal.

    Thanks for the reply,

Yeah there appears to be insulation around it, like lagging type of insulation, the pipe looks like it had been cut some time ago.

I was thinking it looks bigger job than the surveyor suggested, he said few hundred to fix it up but forgot about the roof bit, wasn’t of money he was?

It’s looking like a big job now!

Do you know when the house was built? when would this of been installed, there's a chance it doesn't contain asbestos at all and the surveyor is covering himself. There is services in the uk where you can send them a sample and they will let you know what your dealing with it, is it just cement or does it contain asbestos, which i believe has been illegal here since the late 70's.

These sort of pipes are in houses all over the country and are perfectly safe to be left in place. Just people get worried when they hear it might contain asbestos.

As this material is quite stable, in the UK / NI i believe you can get a special skip with a cover to dispose of this type of material and old roof sheeting etc... In ROI your looking at expensive specialist contractors if there's even a suggestion it contains asbestos.

It should not cost you a lot to get it removed.ask for a few quotes from specialists as we had seen prices vary a lot when we got 4 asbestos sheets removed from a garage before moving in to an old house we bought few years back...
I would also ask the neighbors or local hardware store for local plumbers who would have removed simar pipes and then let the specialist survey and certify clean etc ..
unless yours is the only house with it.

Not sure if this is a pre purchase survey you mentioned but I would have asked the sellers to take the price of the entire thing.

    Hi

Did you find out how to have it removed and the costs involved?
We're buying a 60s house and we have the exact same pipe running from the hot press to the roof, now disconnected. We had an asbestos survey done so I know it defo contains asbestos. The flat top on the roof would also need to be removed. I don't mind paying as I think our health and peace of mind are worth it, but I want to negociate the price of the house down.

We didn’t go through with the sale in the end, had asbestos guys come out and in the end was too much cost attached to it. It was exact same place as you described. There was other significant problems with the house in the end which just wasn’t financially feasible so we walked away.

Is this house in north Dublin by any chance?
