reinstall LED downlight

We have downlights in our ceiling very similar to this one: https://www.v-tac.eu/led-lights/lights2/led-panels/6w-led-slim-panel-light-chrome-round-3000k-detail.html

To do some painting, we took them down. They came right down, just basically pulled on them. Now, we need to put them back, and I'm puzzled. If I bend the spring tabs so that the orange sleeve sticks down below the light ring, when I push them back up into their holes, they don't spring into place. Just hang down, there's no tension. I've never installed this kind of light before, the electrician did these initially and I'd rather not have him out to put them back. Is there some trick? None of the Youtube videos I found included that important step.

Did I break something when I pulled them down? When I stick them back up, bits of the ceiling (plasterboard) break off. .

    Thanks
