Going from r-pi to r-pi3

I bought a raspberry pi back in 2013 and used it for maybe 6 months as a htpc until I bought a laptop and started using that. I've recently resurrected the r-pi from the junk drawer, and have set up it as a spare linux box, which I was going to use for some projects I have my eye on. However, it is desperately slow, for ex.chromium takes about 5 mins to get going and constantly crashes - I could probably source browsers that are less intensive, but at this point, I'm thinking an upgrade to r-pi3 is not out of the question.

I have an SD-card, a HDMI cable, a power cable and a case (no link available, but it was the "ModMyPi Case for Raspberry Pi - Stealth Black") for my r-pi. I can't find anything online that says whether I need to replace any of these for my r-pi3. I assume the SD-card and HDMI cable should work, so no need to get new ones. The other 2 are more debatable: I daresay the power cable is fine, and the case is probably unsuitable.

    Am I about right?

I think from the Pie 2 onwards, its Micro SD that's used

Oh good catch. I was judging by the pics of sets on amazon.co.uk which all seemed to have standard sized SD cards, but I can see now are just adapters. Bit odd, but anyway, so SD-card is non-transferable.

ETA: Judging from the extra USB ports on the 3, the case is also non-transferable, so my only question now is if I need a new power adapter or not.

From the R-Pi 2 onwards a different case was used to that of the R-Pi (1).

The power requirements of the R-Pi 3 are higher than the R-Pi, so it really depends on the PSU you have.
You can check it against those sold specifically for the R-Pi 3.

Yes a micro-SD card is what is required.

BTW, there are still quite a lot of projects that the original Pi is suited to - such as server use and file serving and maybe in house audio across the LAN.
Most of those use specialised versions of Linux, which are stripped down to bare minimum to reduce CPU load.

IMO, the likes of Chrome is not suited to 1 or 2 and probably not 3 either, although it would work.

Use the lightest OS you can that does what you need, else you will always have issues.
