    Gotta feel for WestMeath...

Indeed. Not first time the Westies have gotten the tough end of the stick in hurling.

Mind you, the fact that three of the four semi finalists are 1B teams suggests that other than the dog eat dog for bottom, it makes no difference. But like ourselves ten years ago you are going to suffer some total hidings on the way to getting to where you want to be.

    Ce la vie.

Good point! I often hear people saying what good was that hding for either team. Well it seems hidings are part and parcel of the learning curve for top level hurling. Clare and Waterford took several hammerings in the 70's and 80's before establishing themselves at the top table. Likewise Dublin in more recent times. Take note Carlow and Westmeath.

You could make the same argument for group b being essentially the Leinster....

I think Tyrrell made the same point on Sunday, that league, especially with new non relegation format, is becoming almost a carbon copy of the championship structure.

In fairness the provincial games last year were very good, with Munster again promising to be a minefield, and Leinster might not be as predictable as it turned out to be last year.

where the league fits in with that remains to be seen I suppose. Has been great for ourselves and a few others so far as it provides good testing ground. I thought Sheedy looked a bit puzzled when interviewed on SG as he is probably no wiser now than he was at the start and he has no room for error from now on. Cats, Cork, Clare and Wexford a bit in the same boat perhaps, but Summer could throw up completely different scenario. Should be good.

Very good points. The only actual structural difference between league and championship now is league has 4 qfs as opposed to 2 for championship and an extra team in each group. It’s as near as makes no odds. Always wondered if they could do away with the provincial structure for the championship and let the provinces run their own tournaments in place of the league. You do have those fbd leagues or whatever they’re called early on, but not sure anyone would really miss these if they disappeared.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,665 ✭✭✭Bonniedog

Have the provincials before the championship based on a league?

Not heard that before but sounds interesting. Would make the early season games more competitive as a provincial be more of a prize than getting to play offs or even winning the league, and would boost the interest and intensity of the championship.

Probably also need to stop McDonagh finalists from being in quarter finals. Just makes no sense. Winner should be promoted but getting hammered a few weeks after the McDonagh final high does not make sense at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Yeah, it’s just an idea, no idea if it’d ever gain traction. Provinces could run their tournaments any way they see fit, league, knock out, back door etc

I think a lot would agree that provincial element for championship lacks meaning now. The groups are lop sided. I know 3 munster teams reached all ire s/f last year but that doesn’t alter the equation for me. It’s not a fair system as it stands.

Changing it around as per my idea, you could run a shortened spring competition - but real meaningful provincial tournaments that counties would want to win - and then free up a few extra weeks to either give to clubs and/or spread the championship out a little bit. Too many games too quickly imo.

great idea imo and adds a bit of an incentive for all teams in the semis now

I knw it could be a dead atmosphere inside a half empty Croke Park but its still a final there and thats were every GAA wants too be

could easily be a repeat of the 2018 All Ireland final between Limerick and Galway

Should that of being a red for Morrissey ?

Caught him on the chin. Certain red. Dublin players didn't pressure the ref so he took the easy option.

Dublin are certainly in this game from what I saw of the first half. I can see Waterford bearing Galway later on.

You get the feeling Dublin lost it in the lapse between the red that wasn't and half time.

(Well they were never winning it, but you know what I mean).

Dublin always seem to miss handy frees.

Aimless ball into the forwards have hurt Dublin this half. Well in the game up until the 55 minute mark. Game over now though.

For such a finicky ref he certainly took the easy option on the red card offense. Morrissey himself knew he was in big trouble after making that tackle.

Baffled as to why the Dublin players didn't come in and create a scene. Its horrible to watch but no one can deny putting pressure on the officials doesn't work.

Dublin got a couple of handy frees in the first half and immediately the Limerick players (and crowd) were onto him by contrast. He soon evened it up. It works.

Good effort by the Dubs, they should be happy enough with that outing, very competitive for most of it. Impressed with Sutcliffe. Their puckouts need work badly though, they gave up a few handy points today. Better distribution into the forwards need as well. Leinster will be interesting this year.

Oh it works alright but like you I hate to see it. Still, it was on the ref to make the right call. Morrissey lined him up and absolutely cleaned him out of it with a frontal shoulder to the chest/head area.

Limerick got a few handy frees towards the end as well but over the ref was grand for both teams. He just got the biggest call of the game wrong IMO.

Bit of a dead game so far, at least the first game had a few niggly challenges to get the crowd going

I hate the Allianz hurling league, roll on the championship

Games are so dead - you can see managers don’t give a toss about this competition

Win or lose, it’s only the league

Great win for Waterford and nice too get too a final in Croke Park. I knw a lot of people unhappy with the venue as Thurles would be handier but what can ya do

Limerick looked strong and seemed too get better as the game went on. Dublin had a very good campaign and have the makings of a serious team. Mixed league for Galway but they didn't have the St Thomas players

Sum feck up before the first semi final today as the teams lined up for the anthem too be told over the PA it would actually happen before the 2nd semi lol

You can shoulder a guy when hes striking the ball. Of course you can. It just shows how soft the game is going when people are surprised that Canning didn't get a free . There should be way more shoulders flying in.

He was fouled at least twice immediately prior to that, the second a trip that unbalanced him for the shoulder. Nothing illegal with the shoulder but unsurprisingly the ref missed the earlier indiscretions.

Yeah I think he was fouled before the shoulder tackle. However there was alot let go . Some shocking ref decisions in the LimerickvDublin game aswell. It's like if you go down and appear injured you definitely will get a free...Cannings situation aside proving the rule. Anyway let's bask in the beauty of Morans shoulder.. and hope we see more of it this summer.

Gleeson got a sneaky slap in the balls off Canning in the game in Walsh park, none of ye commenting on that. It's only filth if Gleeson does it.
Golden boy Joe gets another yellow card today but lets all ignore that as well

I would hope that you are not making out that Kevin Moran is the hero of the hour, Joe was trying his up most to drag Galway to the league final and was brave enough to run on and leave himself open to being clocked. As a neutral I hope Joe will be fit enough to get himself right for the championship, please don't make Kevin Moran into some sort of super hero after the incident. Paudie Maher caught him something similar, if the roles were reversed?!!! The best players are always the bravest and the ones that put the body on the line. Joe and Cian Lynch were a joy to watch today, we are privileged to see them in full flow but the joy some people get in seeing them floored is sad. Aussie should be mentioned in the same breadth as those two but unfortunately doesn't carry himself that way.
Will be a very interesting and intriquing final tho.

From my perspective ( waterford supporter) it was a fantastic shoulder. Unfortunate that canning got injured but it was perfectly legal and stopped a certain goal at a crucial time of the game. He was the hero of the hour

Nothing better than seeing a guy in full flight get 'clocked' legitimately. It's what separates the game from Hockey.
