Insuring a vehicle for occasional use

    Hi all,

I am considering buying a cheap used 4x4 because I live in the mountains and in cases of bad snow etc. it would be useful to have one. I'll also use it for other infrequent scenarios where the car won't be sufficient like pulling a trailer etc. but this is a few times per year kind of thing.

What kind of options are open to me in terms of insurance? I am not going to pay for a full insurance policy on a car that would be unlikely to do more than 500km per year.

Could you switch your insurance over for a day at a time?

there aren't: you can't buy short-term insurance, and the cost to transfer from an existing vehicle, per-occasion, would probably cost a fortune over the course of a year.

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Check your policy it might cover you to drive cars that arent in your name, you could then put the 4x4 into other family members name, with RSA insurance the car doesnt even need to be insured by the family member

Classic Insurance maybe? I don't know myself but just throwing it out as an idea.
Get an old defender and if you can get it classically insured with limited mileage it should be cheap enough.
You would be limited in car choice mind.
