The main heavy area of precipitation is struggling to get into the UK, most of it is around Cornwall and then into the English Channel, I'm not sure it will get as far north as London and the M4 corridor.

Back in Ireland the band seems to be decaying over north Leinster. Plenty of precipitation from the Wicklow mountains down to Wexford which stops around Waterford.

Another very intense looking area of precipitation in a narrow band from Cork, through Limerick and on to Galway. Could be some very decent snow inland under that.

Fairly heavy rain in limerick city for the last couple of hours. That skinny band of rain has managed to kept us perfectly underneath it.

dew points in your area have been around 2 or 3C all day. Further north were dew points have been around 0C, precipitation just didn't really get going other than spots of drizzle, light rain or a few flurries here and there.

You may be in luck later with dew points lowering, could be a covering in some southern areas by the morning.

    Thanks Gonzo, everything crossed here!

This GIF animation (may take a while to load as large file) shows how this current low (named 'Helena' by the Spanish Met Office)

    WvvdXEO.gif
(based on ICON Analysis + 5 hr forecast)

Developed from a cold bank of air over the Canadian Maritimes, which in itself originated over the greater Baffin region. Note how quickly it warmed as it crossed the Atlantic. Nothing new of course but doubtlessly, would have warmed quicker than it normally would, given the current warm state of the entire N. Atlantic region at the moment:

    cdas-sflux_ssta_atl_1.png

Note also how quickly the cool, stagnant air mass over Ireland/UK and the NE Atlantic warmed as this system approached. This doubtless was helped in no small part by the warmer than average SST's over this greater region, which would have help raise DPs and 'Wet bulb' temps to levels that would be outside of the norm for such a set up. So basically, we really hadn't a hope today of seeing anything substantial.

Just to add another point. the 'Climate Reanalyzer' final January 2019 stats for the Arctic region N of 65 degree north are in, and no one will be surprised to learn that January temps this decade in this greater Arctic region (the source of all our PM air masses) have risen by 0.6c, on average, since those during the previous decade, which in itself was way warmer than the climate norm.

Closer to home, despite our cool blip at the end of this month, mean temperatures for the month of January will come in at 1.0 Deg. C or greater above the long term mean.

Some Big Snow showers will be coming in off the Irish sea tonight. The 528 Dam line will right over us.

Any chance of this actually pulling off?

Glencullen should have enough height for snow from any streamer activity overnight, also as the band pivots before that some heavier precipitation may move in.

Would you rule out lower level snow with overnight streamers or when the band retreats

    Back on topic...

Cork: not expecting anything more out of the ordinary for the cork metropolitan area. yes - there might be a few light sleet / snow showers but there's not enough there to cause any disruption / discussion in my opinion.

Back to normal temps next week too...

Lots of precip right here at the East Coast now I reckon inland Meath could get a surprise.
